Attack victims 'to quit N Ireland'

Romanian families forced to shelter in a church hall after fleeing their
homes in Belfast in the wake of racist attacks have vowed to leave
Northern Ireland for good.

Note: Guess where they will be coming.

On the R5 morning phone-in they were huffing and puffing in best liberal
bigot fashion about how outrageous was the treatment of the Romanians.
They came to the last caller who was Romanian and proudly put her on air
in the expectation that she would say how wonderful Romanians are and
how they were all wonderful assets to Britain. To the BBC's horror the
woman proceeded to say they were not Romanians but gypsies. She then
happily embellished this with graphic descriptions of how gypsies
behaved wherever they were: robbing, beating and raping and ended
splendidly by saying that the behaviour of the people in Ulster was
quite understandable. Effing hilarious. RH

On the BBC website major news topics usually give viewers the chance to
'have your say'.. however for this particular topic I can't appear to find
any link... I wonder why?. so far they also haven't offered (or on the face
of it even attempted) find out any background as to what might have
triggered this whole episode off, apart from screaming 'racism' and having
it as their lead story all day.. ah well, the typical slippery BBC that we
have all come to know and love and can always rely on for balance!

It reminds me of the case where, in Plymouth I believe, during a
vigilante rampage brought about by a newspaper story regarding a
paedophile living in their midst they attacked and damaged a house
they believed to be the home of a paedeatrician.

Persons on this thread are exhibiting a similar level of intelligence.

Roughly 90% of the population of Romania are in fact Romanians strange
that it might seem. Around 2.5% of the population are Roma or Romani
otherwise described as Romanies.

Romanies first came to this country in the 16th century.

In fact a significant proportion if not a majority of the gypsy
population of this country are not Roma at all but descend from Irish
tinkers. In any case what does it matter? They're still folk aren't
they?

I don't suppose it's worth the effort to go into the history of
gypsies in this country.

That seems a fair description.

They're at about 1840 in terms of European nationalism. It's hard to say
whether they'll advance any further, since they lack a place they can
credibly call home.

On the BBC web site they have two or three subjects of 'Have your Say'.
Today it is on the Iranian elections, a major news subject I agree, and
'are you feeling the pinch', which is not. So what the fuck are you
moaning about? They can't treat every single subject and what the hell
do you want them to have a 'have your say' about? You do not know the
situation in NI so all it would give is another opportunity for
mindless, racist wailers like yourself to spit venom.

I think perhaps you have comprehension difficulties, they have covered
it sufficiently well and one wouild have thought that would have even
reached the minds of hate-filled, prejudiced morons like yourself.

Most of the comments I have seen have been more people ashamed to be
British. I have seen accusations that the Roma children were terrorising
the neighbourhood - unlike us, who sit and wait ad infinitum for the
police or council to sort it out, they do it themselves.
Other comments I have seen are from angry Romanians who do not want to
be associated the 'Romanians' discussed in this story because they are a
'different race'.

I think you'll find that while they may be considered by some to be a
distinct ethnic group, each has a nationality. Rumanians are Rumanians,
British British etc.

In Bulgaria, where I am still planning to move, they are at least 4.7%
of the population, probably more. They are discriminated against there,
as well as Romania. In Sofia, they have walled them off so that
passers-by cannot see the slum they call home.
Brits who have moved there say they all have Roma families in the
villages, but they seem to be more integrated there, with people not so
prejudiced as to not employ them at all. The Brits mostly say there is
no problem with them - they are polite and work hard.
Having said that there has been a massive increase of theft/burglary
from Brit homes, with tools and copper piping from the heating being a
favourite target - nobody has yet admitted that it might be Roma, but
they sure aren't blaming the mafia!

I know that some terrorised my friend so badly that they threatened to
kill him, poured diesel through his shop letterbox, that kind of thing,
and the police refused to even go near the site to question them...
When I was a kid, there were a few campsites around St Albans - a few
people who tangled with them got killed. They don't mess about.

I've heard a lot of shit over the years about Romanies. Real racist
stuff. Then I had a first hand experience of a Romany family who lived
in a council house close to mine for a while.

Guess what my experience was and how it related to all the stories I'd
heard?

"Hate-filled, prejudiced morons like yourself"?.. You won't have to search
too far on these newsgroups to find me standing up for my black British and
Iranian friends, so hardly 'hate-filled and prejudiced'.
I think it's simply a question of facing up to reality and seeing that there
are certain groups of people (such as the Chinese) who contribute, cause
very few problems and have a far better track record than others, who like
it or lump it I happen to think this country would be far better off
without.

Yes, model citizens.

They behaved like anti-social trash. Until then I had dismissed all
the talk I'd heard as prejudice, but my first hand experience was an
eye opener. They confirmed every single myth I'd ever heard about
them.

They drank, stole, accosted people demanding money, their children
terrorised the other local children while their young men terrorised
the grown ups and they were rapidly turning the neigborhood into a
rubbish strewn war zone. When they left after a year or so the house
they occupied was unfit for human habitiation and had to be completely
renovated.

I no longer live in council housing, but if I did and saw a Romany
family move into the street I would be terrified.

Hi neighbour. I lived in Cannon Street - slum that became 'conservation
area' with 1/5 million for a three bed terrace Victorian house.

We were living in Oaklands at the time when the Sandpit Lane people
'accidentally' rolled a car out of their camp entrance into the path of
a motorcylclist who had done something to annoy them. A complete
accident of course - I'm not sure the police even pursued it.
Then there were the charmers over in Park Street...but I think they were
diddies...

I dislike the word "clever", it conjures up visions of the cunning
hebe, another race you

I was brought up quite close to a field where a farmer who employed
gypsies on a seasonal basis allowed them to camp whilst they worked
for him. at other times they would camp in a grassy lane directly
opposite our house.

Yes there is a lot in what you say.

They were seen as a minor nuisance, as petty thieves notorious for
rowdy and disorderly behaviour partularly when they had been on the
bevvy. Where they did break the law they regularly appeared before the
local beak though I understand, that serving a summons on them was a
nightmare. I was told the only way to get them into court was to lock
them up when they digressed and get them into the court the next
morning.

However, that was many years ago and I fancy that these days that CPS
formalities and bureaucracy would render such strategies impossible.

Be that as it may, accepting that certain elements of the itinerant
population can be a problem, where do we go from there. What exactly
do you lot want doing with these people? What is the final solution?
Extermination perhaps? Would you settle for permanent confinement in
camps?

A film yes, in part at least. 'Lou' and 'Ravi' are Provenal words. That
might give you a lead.

Wouldn't it be better not to allow them in in the first place? The
hypocrisy in the media right now is astounding - I found a Belfast
Telegraph report from 1999, which said that 100 Roma a week were
sneaking into NI in the back of lorries and then seeking asylum - they
were desperate for a law to stop them. I don't know if such a law was
ever created, but to see them now fawning over them and putting the
people against them in the 'Nazi' bracket, referring to the migrants as
'people who want to work when British people won't' is sickening. Those
Roma have not done a day's work since they arrived, and are probably
quite happy living on benefits, but suddenly this is hideous racism that
everyone has to feel guilty about, just because EU expansion means they
now have the *right* to come here rather than them sneaking in and
claiming asylum.
Pah.

However as I understand it they have absolutely no right to social housing,
but if they have how does that happen? I can't see how they can possibly
claim political asylum status from a member EU country.

They have a difficult status - 'Romanians' don't have the right to come
here and work yet - but they do have the right to come here. So they
come and go to the council - I have no job and nowhere to live. They
have children, so the council has to house them because they are
'homeless'. They should not have been allowed to come if they are not
allowed to work, but even if they were allowed to work, they probably
wouldn't.

Except that Romany gypsies have been present in this country since the
16th Century.

I don't think the Irish tinkers have been here as long but they go
back a long way certainly well into Victorian times.

The thing about this thread is that I have gone back through the press
reports of the events in Belfast and have not come across the word
'gypsy' once. Further they were houses that were stoned not caravans.

This association between Romanians and gypsies is a product of certain
individuals that frequent this group in what can only be described as
an attempt to take advantage of prejudice that exists against gypsies
that have no bearing here.

Romanians are simply Romanian nationals are they not? Romania is a
member of the EU is it not? If that is the case then so long as both
countries remain members of the EU then these people cannot be illegal
immigrants and we cannot " not (to) allow them in in the first place"
any more than we could be kept out of Romania. We have open borders
and freedom of movement of peoples.

Haven't we seen all of this before with this scummy so called 'socialist
government? they just shrug their shoulders and whine something like
'There's nothing we can really do about, it's the EU they have free movement
and if they have kids we have a duty to accommodate them', despite other EU
governments managing to implement controls which appear to be to be a lot
stricter and more selective than our own.

I'm not usually one for conspiracy theories, however the more I see what's
happening under this government the more I'm coming around to believe that
they are either incredibly stupid, or deliberately going out of their way to
ferment some kind of serious civil unrest in this IMV already dangerously
overcrowded little island.

In small numbers, yes. The EU expansion has meant that countries with
high populations of Roma are now open for those people to freely come
here - every Roma in Europe now has the right to live in Britain.

They are not coming in caravans. They do not live in caravans in Romania
and Bulgaria - they live in houses or shanty towns. It's a bit of a
stereotypical view you have there!

These people are Romanian nationality Roma. Please read the press. The
prejudice is widespread, with most vociferous comments coming from
Romanians who are not Roma and do not want to be associated with them.

Yes and no - they are a seperate community - I thought that was widely
acknowledged...they are hardly integrated in Romania.

Yes

They are not illegal, no. Doesn't mean they are not criminal? I have not
yet encountered one who has not tried to rip me off, attack me or my
family, and who actually has a job (apart from the vampires that stole
my gold jewellery from my market stall back in 1999 - they were seasonal
workers here for strawberry picking.) Now they are here legally, they
beg aggressively (try taking a leisurely walk up Oxford Street or
Trafalgar Square), commit crime, turn neighbourhoods into slums and
harass their neighbours.
These are not the 'Roma' as we know them in Britain, the ones that live
in spanking shiny caravans and keep things nice.

> and we cannot " not (to) allow them in in the first place"

I would argue against letting in *anyone* who has no intention of
seeking work and intends living off the state. Wouldn't you? Of course
under normal immigration rules, one would have to prove that fact -
under EU expansion and Freedom of Movement rules, there is no need to
prove anything.

> any more than we could be kept out of Romania. We have open borders
> and freedom of movement of peoples.

Correct. And it's mad. I wonder how many more we have to take in before
this is acknowledged as madness? Of course the Roma are going to come
here in numbers - they are so loathed in their own countries, that to
come here even with nothing guarantees them a massive increase in their
standard of living, even if they are still loathed. All they have to do
is bring their children and they will get housed and some money.

And as we write this, there is currently a massive expansion in
traveller sites being made available, by force, around the country. If
you object, you are a labelled 'racist' by the council. I can only
presume that they haven't tried to impose one near you yet.
And this is on top of all the sites being 'created' by travellers who
just move onto greenbelt land when nobody is looking, and then use
human rights laws to prevent themselves from being thrown off the land
again.

I have no idea what is going on. I know that they don't give a hoot if
the dole queue is filled up by Brits who have been displaced by cheaper
foreign labour, they don't care about imposing traveller sites all over
the place and silencing the opposition with accusations of racism, they
don't care how expensive housing is because there are too many people
here, they don't care how the hospitals and schools are inadequate are
becoming. I don't know what the agenda is, but Britain as a country will
be completely unrecognisable within 5 years - it will just be a giant
immigrant camp, a lawless place where nobody can earn enough to even pay
their basic bills.

I too know or know of Gipsy families who have given up the travelling
itinerant gipsy life as well as the odd individual who has married a
non-gypsy and settled down. I don't regard these as gypsies.

I further now of a perfectly legal gypsy owned site that offers
accommodation to travellers. It is behind and backs on to former
miners' cottages (now privately owned)

A significant proportion of the residents reside their in their
caravans permanently, use the local amenities send their kids to the
local schools and so on. The people who live in the houses that share
no more than a fence with the site rarely complain. "I never have any
trouble" one once told me, " If he get's any bad 'uns on his site 'he'
kicks 'em off"

The gypsies I referred to earlier lived an itinerant lifestyle in
squalid horse drawn canvas covered caravans. Nowadays of course they
live in trailers mostly on sites but occasionally you seem them having
taken over a lay by or a piece of waste land where they tend to
remain until the police move them on.

As far as I know these people still frequent the grassy lanes I knew
as a kid. They certainly did up until I left the area in the mid 90's.

Not according to the fact book

https://www.cia.gov/library/publications/the-world-factbook/geos/RO.html

This tells us that Romanians make up near 90% of the Romanian
population with Roma (who I understand to be gypsies of of gypsy
background) a mere 2.5% behind Hungarians at 6.6%

I have examined the press and they invariably describe these people a
Romanian (nationality) The words 'gypsy' doesn't feature and Roma just
once. Not that this should matter.

> They are not illegal, no. Doesn't mean they are not criminal? I have not

Once upon a day gypsies were an important element in the rural
economy. They provided a pool of seasonal labour. They traded horses.
They followed the travelling fairs. before the first village shop even
appeared gypsy pedlars brought hardware into rural communities. They
worked as drovers. They sold clothes pegs which they made by whittling
willow branches.

Towards these ends they used to camp on commons, lanes, and
occasionally fields just outside the village. Over the generations
they acquired traditional camping rights. These rights have largely
disappeared as the result of enclosures, building and the reduction in
opportunities for them in the countryside.

That's why today, local authorities are supposed to provide gypsy
sites.

They always did have a reputation as petty thieves and even as baby
snatchers!

The men in particular were as hard as nails and often became
quarrelsome after a drink or two or three.

Many of the prize fighters who entertained our country squires were
gypsies as were many of the booth boxers that used to feature in the
travelling fairs. I once watched an organised bare knuckled prize
fight between two gypsies. It didn't last long before a police car
turned up and stopped it.

I hear what you say but you simply cannot in 2009 address a problem of
law and order in terms of membership of a particular social group just
as it would be unacceptable to build a high wall around a "rough"
council estate and declare a dawn till dusk curfew inside it.

All social groups harbour a delinquent element. In some groups of
course, the size of that element may be substantial. Nonetheless,
criminality can only be addressed in the context of the individuals
concerned and not in their social grouping. Neither can we allow or
condone the actions of other delinquent groups in taking what doesn't
even resemble the law into their own hands.

I don't think there is any easy solution. The problem comes from the
degenerate culture of the Romanies. They have a diseased mind set and
that is not easliy remedied. They will remain anti social and petty
criminal predatory trash whatever is done.

There is no chance of families of Romanies or asylum seekers suddenly
setting up home in the area where I now live and if any did eventually
get here they would have to have done a lot of social climbing to do
so, becoming civilised in the process and therefore no longer a
problem, so I can afford to ignore them.. It would be easy for me to
be a lefty liberal and condemn the desperate acts of those who suffer
the worst of degenrerate cultures in their midst as crass racism and
bigotry, which is what the PC chatterati of the BBC and Guardian do,
but that doesn't solve anything.

Tough policing might help alleviate problems, but the PC chatterati
have deemed that Romanies and other social detritus are all hard put
upon Martin Luther Kings and Mahatma Ghandis to a man who are being
ruthlessly persecuted by Nazi thugs, therefore tough policing would be
considered unfair and racist.

I suppose there is no alternative but to wait for the prophesies of an
old politician concerning the river Tiber to come true.

How racist of you Maria. Don't you know that we are all brothers under
the skin and responsible for each other? Is there even one M.P. with
the guts to say "round them
up and ship them out"? I wonder what would happen if they parked
their caravans
in some field owned by some M.P. and proceeded to turn it into a
shambles. In Coventry,
when I was a child I remember the gypos came to town about once a
month. They were allowed to stay for 48 hours and park their caravans
on The Common. They sold pegs house to house. They were thieves then
and remain so and were moved on when their times
was up. They have turned Rome and Paris into cities where no tourist
is safe from
their criminal kids. THe German people were glad when Germany got rid
of them
and teh Italians are trying to do the same. They are Indians, not
Europeans and it is
obvious they were kicked out of India also.

What is making me angry about this very one-sided story, is that nobody
is reporting that the Roma have been committing crime and harrassing
people in that neighbourhood. They mob people at cashpoints,
pickpocketing, use razors to slit the straps from handbags, steal
clothes from washing lines, bikes from sheds, and those 'working' harass
people to buy something from them. This, according to the Mail, has been
confirmed by the police. There is also the issue that apparently people
living in 'The Village' still live in terrace houses with outside
toilets, while the Roma get housed in more acceptable state housing.
These facts are hidden in a small paragraph in a large article in the
Mail today.
What do people actually expect? Why do we have to try and live in
harmony with them, when they have no intention of living in harmony with us?

You're "angry about this very one-sided story..." after reading a
report entitled:

"As hate-filled mobs drive Romanian gipsies out of Ulster, we ask who's
REALLY to blame?"

A report full of little more than hearsay and inuendo; "A shopkeeper
says...", "a bloke in on off-licence thinks...", "a local resident
claims some of them stole his trousers...".

Despite what you've been led to believe, nowhere in the report does it
say "crimes by Romanians" have been confirmed by police; only that,
"the crimes have been confirmed".

Learn to read.

Neither is there any evidence that immigrants are getting preferential
treatment for council houses. Were these Romanians even livinig in
council property? You have no idea, but don't let that bother you. Were
any of these Romanians in regular employment? You have no no idea, but
don't let that bother you.

The original article in the Daily Mail also refers to Hungarians being
intimitated and forced to move out of their homes. There has also been
a series of attacks against Polish families. You've heard about that of
course, but don't let it bother you.

> Why do we have to try and live in harmony with them, when they have no
> intention of living in harmony with us?

Have you ever had bricks thrown through your windows? People spitting
on you in the street? Threatening to kill your children?
