If you're like me, you've probably noticed the growing number
of foreign cars on our streets. It seems like every other car
I see is either made by a Japanese company like Toyota or Honda,
or by a German company like BMW or Porsche.
This and the continuing imbalance between our imports and exports
indicate to me that Americans have had no problem spending their
dollars with foreign companies. However, until 2004 these same
Americans were very reluctant to invest their dollars with these
same foreign companies.
Now a growing number of Americans seem to be getting the message
that foreign stocks can be a boon to their portfolios --
to the tune of investing about $200 billion in them over the last
two years.
If you're not among them, you probably should be.

Enron Traders Caught On Tape
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2004/06/01/eveningnews/main620626.shtml
(CBS) When a forest fire shut down a major transmission line into
California, cutting power supplies and raising prices, Enron energy
traders celebrated, CBS News Correspondent Vince Gonzales reports.
"Burn, baby, burn. That's a beautiful thing," a trader sang about the
massive fire.
Enron traders scheming, according to call transcripts

For example, in one transcript a trader asks about "all the money
you guys stole from those poor grandmothers of California."
To which the Enron trader responds, "Yeah, Grandma Millie, man.
But she's the one who couldn't figure out how to (expletive) vote
on the butterfly ballot."

Yes, globalization is going to generate exactly that. Former economic
powerhouses will be left in the dust to collapse until they become third
world countries. Once the western world collapse, the demand for the Assian
goods will collapse too, then all the increase in wages that happen today is
going to vanish away.
With everybody starving, it will be very easy for multinational corporations
to buy acres of land at a bargain price. The multinational corporations eye
a neo-feudalistic world, where a gang of overrich own everything and
everybody else are slaves on their domain.
The only solution to avoid this is for government to increase corporate
taxes and taxes on dividends and capital gain. This is a must, otherwise
the multinational corporations will distroy US economy !!!!
These tax money can be used to provide population with: health care,
pensions, university education and finance research and help startups that
will implement the latest technical and scientific advancements.
Into globalized XXI century, only a mentally insane will claim that low
taxes are good for the economy.

It's more like 1 domestic to 3 foreign import. Most of the domestics
"on the road" are actually rentals.
Domestic auto manufacturers still have a chance if they kick their bumbling
dilettante CEO's to the curb. The lazy-assed, fatheaded idiots currently
populating the boardrooms have no vision.

Well, fully agree that 99% of the CEOs (regardless of industry) are just
dumb assheaded individuals that does not deserve more than 0.5%..1% from
what they currently make. However, beside that, the crisis is rather
systemic.
All good US companies have a huge handicap against foreigners:
Costs for healthcare and pensions. These are fixed expenses the company have
to pay them regardless if they make a profit or encounter a loss.
More than that, workers know that without that job they lose (beside wages)
health care and retirement. Based on this fact, the unions are going to
strongly oppose any layoffs.
Now imagine that we get a smart administration. They implement long term
unemployment and free college/university education for layoff workers
beside universal health care and pension system. Now, if a worker lose his
job at a troubled manufacturer, he get the opportunity to get an advanced
degree for free, get unemployment (and negotiation help with the bank so he
can afford to keep his house) and of course his health care and pension is
insured. Everything with the condition to go back to school or (or if he
already have an advanced degree) to participate into an gov. sponsored
research program.
The troubled manufacturer can now layoff more easy young workers willing to
get a higher degree so in the future to get much better pay, or engineers
willing to get new cutting edge skills so later to be able to go to
implement them into a domestic business being payed huge money as expert
into a new field.
Beside that, the manufacturer does not have fixed expenses to pay for health
care and pensions. He pay them as a percent of profit (tax) therefore when
in trouble (no profit) he does not have these expenses !!! True, when he is
over profitable he is actually going to pay more. HOWEVER, the company pay
only when they CAN AFFORD to do so. If they want to reduce these taxes,
they can invest in new technology from the research labs. By this they pay
the labs for license and employ (with very good wages) experts who did that
research. Since this experts may actually be their formers employee laydoff
in downturn, they already know the company so the technology transfer
happen very fast. And highly payed researchers can cover now from their
taxes health care and pensions.
This is a win win situation for everybody, expect corporate looters looking
for a quick buck today at any cost for tommorrow.
And by having commodities produces offshore while we export cutting edge
technology we can take full advantage of globalization and have
globalization turned from a bad to a very good thing FOR EVERYBODY !!!!
