Details on Santa Monica Shooting, Fire Emerge

LOS ANGELES - John Zawahri, who killed five people in a rampage in Santa
Monica last week, apparently built his own assault weapon, using it to shoot
his father and brother before he set fire to their family home, officials
said Thursday.
Two officials who were briefed on the investigation said the semi-automatic
weapon appears to have been built with component parts that are legal to
obtain, but put together make the rifle illegal in California. They spoke on
condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly
about the investigation.
The finding about the component parts was first reported by radio station
KFI-AM.
The 23-year-old Zawahri's 15-minute midday rampage June 7 spanned a mile
between his father's home, where his father and brother were shot to death,
and Santa Monica College, where police killed him in the library. Along the
way, he fired at vehicles and strangers, fatally wounding three people. One
other person was seriously wounded and two others had minor injuries.
On Thursday, an official close to the investigation said the fire at
Zawahri's father's home, which erupted soon after neighbors heard shots
fired, was intentionally set.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the information
had not yet been publicly released, said the fires were started in a front
living room and atop one of two twin beds in a room of the house.
Several boxes of matches were also found in the bedroom.
Firefighters found the bodies of the gunman's father and brother in a
bedroom that was uninvolved in the blaze. The house was found unkempt with
files and papers scattered throughout, providing ample kindling.
In Zawahri's bedroom, investigators found a drill press among other
materials that indicate he likely assembled the weapon.
The drill press is used to help finish building the rifle by drilling holes
in the lower receiver. A lower receiver that is only 80 percent complete can
easily be purchased, and because it is not complete, a person isn't required
to go through a background check, nor does the part need to have a serial
number.
In California such weapons require a "bullet button" kit, which needs to be
added to a lower parts kit to make it legal. The bullet button kit modifies
the weapon so that a separate tool must be used to release an ammunition
magazine and reload the gun; without such a modification a person can press
a button to release the magazine.
Zawahri was carrying 1,300 rounds of ammunition in magazines that were
capable of holding 30 rounds each. Such high-capacity magazines are illegal
to purchase, sell or transfer in California. Possession is not illegal.
Zawahri's last reported contact with law enforcement was seven years ago,
when bomb-making materials were found at his house during a search prompted
by threats to students, teachers and campus police officers at Olympic High,
a school for students with academic or disciplinary issues.
Retired police officer Cristina Coria, who helped serve the search warrant,
said Zawahri was hospitalized for psychiatric evaluation at the time. She
didn't know the outcome of the evaluation.
Police declined to provide further details, saying Zawahri was a minor at
the time. But once a person is held for such an exam, they cannot access or
possess firearms for five years.
In the case of Zawahri, that prohibition would have expired in 2011.

3/D printer that prints out metal parts.
The horse is out of the barn and it's too late to close the door,
average honest law abiding people can make their own guns.
And now a gun doesn't need to look like a gun... The world just became

Nope, he did not modify a legal gun. He built a gun.
The "receiver" is the "gun". All the other stuff such as barrels, triggers,
bolts, springs, etc. are completely legal gun parts.
He bought a chunk of metal with some machining already done and some holes
drilled. He converted that chunk of metal into a receiver (a gun) by doing
some additional work.
His chunk of metal did not have a serial number. If he had bought a "legal
gun" it would have had a serial number when he bought it.
I don't have enough info to know if his gun was legal in CA. His work on
the receiver was certainly legal, but he may have jazzed it up in an illegal
manner. The news reports are unclear on the subject.
Face it Sid, you don't know squat about guns. You only have the irrational
fear of the evil rays that emit when you think about a gun.

A military M-16 has forward assist and chambers the bullet much faster
and it is continuous fire... You can empty a clip with one pull on the
trigger, not so on an AR-15.

Legally in California, 150 10 round magazines or 150 reloads of one 10 round
magazine. Or perhaps he has some pre-ban grandfathered magazines of larger
capacity.
And by the way, 1500 rounds isn't very many. It would take about 4 months
for me to shoot that much....100 rounds per week minimum. If you own more
than one caliber gun, you might keep 1000-2000 rounds in stock for each
caliber. So an active gun hobbyist might have 5000-15000 rounds at hand.

rounds. That does NOT mean that you can fire 800 rounds in one minute. And
that figure is for the military full-auto version...a "real" assault weapon.
The barrel gets extremely hot if even 30 rounds are rapidly fired.
Maximum semiauto rate of fire is typically 45 rounds per minute, and maximum
sustained fire is 12/15 rounds per minute. If you want to actually hit a
target, 15 rounds per minute is about right for a maximum.
The rates of fire you are projecting will quickly damage the rifle.

It really is NONE of your business any more than why someone wants to
buy a Pick-up truck rather than a Hybrid Honda.....
Someone could kill a bus load of kids with either vehicle. That's 20
kids dead in less than a heartbeat. NOT 2 minutes, but in the blink of
an eye.
