Papa John Schnatter is no fan of Obamacare. The CEO of Papa John’s
International has occasionally railed against the reform for
months. Leading up to the election, he was a Mitt Romney supporter
and fundraiser. Now that the election is over, he’s doubling down
on his claim that the health care reform will force his company to
increase pizza prices by 10-14 cents a pie. He estimates that
Obamacare will end up costing his company $5-8 million annually.

The issue: the Affordable Care Act dictates that full-time
employees (30 hours or more per week) at companies with more than
50 workers need to be provided health insurance. Schnatter has
further claimed that some employers will cut employee hours to
avoid providing them with healthcare.
His remarks have sparked anger on the internet, one thread on
social news site Reddit, titled “There are plenty of places to get
cheap s***** pizza in the world- Anyone else on reddit ready to
boycott Papa John’s?” has captured more than 21,000 up-votes and
4,500 comments. A host of Facebook groups with the same idea have
cropped up in the past 48 hours.

Meanwhile, shares in Papa John’s International have been tumbling
since last Thursday, falling from $51.70 at market close Wednesday
to $49.22 on Monday, a 4.2% drop.

Checking Papa Schnatter’s Math

Last year, Papa John’s International captured $1.218 billion in
revenue. Total operating expenses were $1.131 billion. So if
Schnatter’s math is accurate (Obamacare will cost his company $5-8
million more annually), then new regulation translates into a .4%
to .7% (yes, fractions of a percent) expense increase. It’s
difficult to set that ratio against the proposed pie increase,
given size and topping differentials, but many of their large
specialty pizzas run for $16. Remarkably, a 10-14 cent increase on
a $16 pizza falls in a comparable range: .6% to.9%. But the cost
transference becomes less equitable if you’re looking at medium
pizzas, which run closer to $12, meaning a .8% to 1.15% price
increase.

For the sake of argument, let’s say that Papa John’s sells exactly
half medium/half large specialty pizzas. Averaging the ranges for
both sizes, then averaging that product yields a .86% price
increase — well outside the range of what Schnatter says Obamacare
will cost him.

Bad math, the cost to serving a pizza
is not a direct percentage of gross revenue,
it is more related to the gross payroll with
benefits and the added cost is related to
the additional cost in that number due to
the ACA mandates.

Do you know of any, and are you sure
they will not have to raise prices to be
able to stay in business with all the
new taxes, rules, regulations, and

Yes the San Diego area has scads of independent pizza joints, of
course they don't fall under the new affordable healthcare rules
and neither does my business, we have less than 50 employee's. At
least that's my understanding of it and I admit that is sparce.
The health insurance we pay now (and have for 25 years) is
breaking our backs.. $1,200 to Kaiser every month for two thin,
healthy, active people who NEVER (knock wood) get sick or need
doctors. My fingers are crossed that Obamacare will be better!

'rena

PS Many of us don't care if any business needs to raises prices a
bit to accomodate the new law and improve life for our neighbors
and maybe even ourselves! I already pay extra to buy made in USA,
Union, organic labels, what's another buck or two.

You pay what for health care, and
have (hardly) ever used it?

Sucker!

Why would the ACA be better, the
rates have to go up, do you think your
insurance company will lower rates?

I don't know what the rules are
about 80% being required to be spent
on fees, but I don't think that can apply
to individual policies, the whole idea of
insurance is the non-users paying for
the big users.

"Bottom feeding leftists", lovely.. snarling vitriol. Well here is
some more news to LOL about.

Papa John's falls on news of class-action suit

NEW YORK ? Shares of Papa John's declined on Tuesday following
news of class-action certification for a lawsuit that claims the
pizza chain had unsolicited text messages sent to cell phones.

THE SPARK: The lawsuit filed with the U.S. District Court for the
Western District of Washington in Seattle claims Papa John's
violated state and federal law when they had the marketing company
OnTime4U send unsolicited text messages on its behalf to cell
phones advertising their pizza products. The lawsuit says that
500,000 illegal text messages were sent to Papa John's customers
across the U.S.

Papa John's faces potential damages of more than $250 million. The
plaintiffs may each potentially receive $500 or more in damages
for each text message.

Messages left with Papa John's seeking comment were not
immediately returned.

250 million he pays in fines and settlements.

So you say but the news articles I've been able to find with Google
don't say anything of the sort, except the quotes from the mouthpiece
for "Papa" putting that spin on it. The court will be the arbiter.
500,000 unsolicited text messages! there oughta be a law about that
kind of spam! (heh) It looks rather like this case will be used as a
warning to spammers who are getting a little fast and loose with
pushing the limits of the law.

No one said he shouldn't express his opinion, but let me get this
straight.. are you saying that it isn't ok for the public to express
their opinion and concern about a person who wants their money and
puts his politics on the street? In my business none of our clients
have a clue about our politics or religion, I know those subjects

One doesn't need arguments to counter your unsupported opinions,

# Wayne.. no one would even know about this if Mr Papa John wouldn't
# have tried to affect our election by going public himself with his
# own politics. It is tit for tat. There would be no no boycotts,
# petitions etc if he didn't take the stump politically. If it's
# flying back in his face, it is fair and just desserts.

WTF???? You want to attack and take down anyone who expresses an opinion
contrary to yours?

Anyone who presents an opinion in public deserves "tit for tat", petitions
and boycotts?

That makes you are real dipshit.

WTF yourself. Mr Papa was trying to "take down" my president and his
healthcare plan and fell flat on his face with his intimidation
tactics, he lost, it didn't work, the president was re-elected and Mr
Papa's business has a stain on it.

It is sad you can't express yourself on the issue without snarling.

It is public record.

They would be the unsupported opinions that you snipped, you pathetic
moron... the unsupported opinions that I responded to with the
remarks that you seem to have a problem with.. see below:

Your unsupported opinion...

You seem to have trouble dealing with issues that are not directly in
front of your eyes. Perhaps you should discuss that with a physician.
Short term memory loss can be a serious problem, especially when seen
with the signs of dementia that you exhibit.

>That there is in FACT a

Leftist protests are a dime a dozen. The only time anybody pays
attention is when the protesters get their heads busted or arrested.

>intimidation of the public and his staff during elections?

As I recall, there was only a warning of what the strike was going to
cause to happen... followed by the warning being ignored and the
warning becoming an event.

>Or the
>FACT that he and his minions are being sued for spamming.

Anybody can sue anybody for just about anything. The facts are not
known until the suit is processed.

I eagerly await your presentation of the "public record" pertaining to
the items I labeled above as being your unsupported opinions.

I am going on what I read in the Examiner, it was germane to
the conversation and not my opinion.

What strike?

Weak rant and the FACTS remain.. FACT, Papa John and his asociates
are being sued for spamming, FACT, there is a petition that has
gathered almost 125,000 signatures in re protest of Papa John's
strong arming the public and his staff in a US election. My
opinions don't alter the facts. These FACTS really got your
panties in a wad. But you cannot dispute them, just call me names
and give me a giggle when opening Usenet.

Doesn't matter. That's called freedom of speech. What you are pushing is
retribution.

You would really have enjoyed the McCarthy hearings, where lefties were
persecuted and had their livelyhoods destroyed.

On second thought, you would have objected to that because the people being
persecuted share your beliefs.

> That makes you are real dipshit.

# It is sad you can't express yourself on the issue without snarling.

But the statement still applies.

This is so rich.. I suppose you saw the news today that "Papa" is
back pedaling, walking back, denying, flip-flopping, blaming someone
else, just like his boy Romney always does... really.

<CHUCKLE> Here's a small suggestion. Perhaps you should try to get
your news from someplace other than leftist bloggers.

I see that you cannot provide any evidence of any contradictions.
