Three Republican members of the House Subcommittee Health and Human
Services have written a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary
Kathleen Sebelius demanding that she reveal details of her solicitations
to health care companies for donations to fund the implementation of
Obamacare.
We write with great concern over the reports of impropriety concerning
solicitations of donations for a nonprofit that is assisting in the
implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, writes
subcommittee chairman Rep. Jack Kingston, along with Rep. Rodney
Alexander and Rep. Andy Harris. As described by the Department of
Justice, federal regulations only permit solicitations by federal
department officials if you do not solicit funds from a subordinate or
from someone who has or seeks business with the Department, and you do
not use your official title. In addition, it appears that a great
conflict of interest [sic] in soliciting funds for this purpose. Your
actions, as described in recent reports, appear to violate these
regulations.
The lawmakers then demand Sebelius answer a number of questions to
clarify the actions that were taken by you and ensure that no wrongdoing
occurred. Among other things, they want to know everyone Sebelius
solicited for money; any HHS employees who took part in the
solicitations; and a description of any interactions the companies that
were solicited have had with HHS.
Other House members are also demanding information from Sebelius. On
Monday, the Energy and Commerce Committee also sent her a request for
information about her requests that top health care and insurance
companies, like Kaiser Permanente and United Healthcare, contribute to
the higher-than-expected costs of starting up Obamacare.
