The Crimean War lasted for two and a half years and involved five
nations. Then there was the Franco-Prussian war which was a curbstomp
but had huge consequences.

Note that the nations which saw the Soviet Union as a model to follow
were themselves as far below the Soviet standard of living as the
Russians were below the Western European standard.

isolated assassination in Sarajevo a year later to set off a chain
reaction whose repercussions would reach around the world, with historic
consequences."

This is of course bullshit. At the time, the Balkans were routinely
referred to as a "powderkeg" and people were as acutely aware of the
danger as people were aware of the danger of nuclear annihilation during
the Cold War.
