Where are the liberals, still soliciting donations? The needy will all
be dead by the time those supplies get there.

The reaction from conservatives and pro-life advocates to the Oklahoma
tornadoes has been moving to see — with pro-life advocates on Twitter
pushing for donations to a variety of groups providing aid to the
victims.

However, Glen Beck, the pro-life former Fox News television show host
and current radio show host deserves significant praise for organizing
a Convoy of Hope. He quickly assembled two semi-trucks full of food,
diapers and other supplies for the tornado victims.

How'd you miss the Red Cross presence? They're all over the news.

Not only that. The aid agencies prefer money to be sent so they can
source, as locally as possibly, what is actually needed on the ground,
and not stuff randomly shipped in that will often just be wasted.

Perhaps it is more a matter of perspective? Glen Beck had reporters
on hand and his PR department in high gear before he did anything at
all.

Sure. A bunch of stuff that may or may not get to its intended
beneficiaries because the Beckies may or may not have any clue as to how
the distribution system there works, and may or may not have sent useful
goods.

OTOH, liberals and other sane people sent money to the Red Cross and the
local United Way, both of which know the area and know how to get needed
goods to the folks in most need the fastest.

Beck is looking out for his image and his bottom line. If he happens, by
accident, to help some tornado victims, expect him to shout it from the
rooftops. If, however, stuff doesn't get where it's needed; gets to the
wrong people; or his effort gets in the way of better-organized and
better-targeted assistance, expect him to be silent about that.

Sending stuff in these sorts of large-scale disasters is almost always a
feel-good thing for the donors, and almost always a waste of time for
the intended recipients.

And the local United Way. They have far more contacts and resources for
getting aid where it's needed, maybe even more than the Red Cross.

It's nice they found something useful to do, besides praying. We're still
waiting for an explanation of why God struck the most Christian,
conservative state in America with his worse tornado ever.

I worked for a local United Way, and one of our funded agencies was our
area Red Cross. Your overhead number is laughable; our UW overhead was
consistently around 10%, and the Red Cross was not much higher. We got
their records because we needed them in order to determine whether we'd
fund them, and I reviewed every RC application every year I worked
there. Maybe up to 15-20% overhead; nothing like 80%.

On top of that, special disaster relief funds donated for specific
events like the OK tornadoes are passed through 100% by UW's, and I
think RC does the same.

BTW, FWIW, do you know who Beck is giving the cash donations to? If it
isn't the RC or UW or some other local agency, how will he assure folks
the money will be spent effectively? RC and UW are audited for these
things; can Beck say the same for his bunch?

BTW, how much did you donate to anyone helping out the victims of this
disaster? And how do you know anything you donated will actually get to
those for whom it's intended?

You might want to find out some facts before you throw around
accusations against agencies that actually help people in distress.

Or, and this may be easier for you than actually looking stuff up, *you*
could FOAD, shithead.

Here's the info from the United Way of Central Oklahoma, the one serving
the affected area:

"The devastating May tornadoes have left most Oklahomans stunned and
wondering what they could do to help. United Way of Central Oklahoma
advises that monetary donations are the best way to assist. The
organization has activated its disaster relief fund effective Monday,
May 20, 2013, so individuals may contribute specifically to the May
tornadoes relief and recovery efforts.

"We are reactivating the disaster relief fund at the request of many of
our donors and corporate partners who are seeking an efficient and
accountable way to assist with the relief effort, said Debby Hampton,
President and CEO of United Way of Central Oklahoma.

"Fund dollars will be distributed without administrative fees to United
Way Partner Agencies working on the tornado relief efforts. Agencies
must clearly prove services provided and demonstrate need for financial
support. Organizations that receive United Way disaster fund assistance
will be evaluated and held strictly accountable. The May Tornado Relief
Fund will serve both immediate needs, intermediate, and long-term care."

Notice in the last paragraph: "Fund dollars will be distributed without
administrative fees to United Way Partner Agencies working on the
tornado relief efforts." IOW, 100% pass-through. No UW overhead taken out.

Plus the tried, tested, LOCAL accountability mechanisms to be sure the
funds are spent for what they are donated for, and are used efficiently
and effectively. No fucking around trying to find out who needs what
from the big shiny semis of mostly-useless donated goods.

If Beck's money donations are spent with equal effectiveness, efficiency
and accountability, I say good on him. If not, fuck him and all his kind.

Many years ago United Way got a lot of bad press for high
overhead costs, up to 80% in some offices. Since then
they have cleaned up their act and are now on a par with
other charities with overhead of 10% to 25%.

Even at 10% overhead I would still not give money to UW
simply because UW does not do any charity work. It just
collects money, takes it's cut, and passes the rest on to real
charities. By giving directly to the charity of your choice
the charity will get 10% to 25% more money. Giving
directly also insures the money will go where you want
it instead of going to charities that you would rather not support.

In addition to the above reasons I know of some local
charities that received unsolicited checks from UW for a
couple hundred dollars. UW then added to local charity
to their list of 'supported charities' without asking for
permission. At least one local charity sent the money back
and demanded that they be removed from the 'supported
charities' list. Donations went down because several large
donors stopped giving as they thought their UW donations
were now going to the local charity. The total received from UW
was less than the amount lost from a single donor who
stopped given because he thought UW was now supporting
the charity.

UW does more than simply collect and divvy up money. They support local
agencies with training, advocacy and assistance with program
development, accountability, technology improvements, and many other
things. Many local UWs run programs of their own, in things like
literacy (where other programs aren't doing those things.)

My local UW, for instance, runs a free store where donated items
(furniture, pots, pans, beds, etc.) are distributed to folks who need
them through a referral system, so there is accountability and assurance
that donated stuff goes to folks who really need it and can't afford it.
This operation is run on a shoestring, and doesn't take from their other
agencies' funding.

Of course, anyone is free to use their charity money as they see fit. I
understand why many folks choose direct donations over donation through
UW. But to say UW isn't an added value to the agencies and areas that
they serve is almost always false, and/or a hold-over from an earlier
era where UW did mostly fundraise and pass-through. Times change;
sometimes minds don't.

When little Timmy McVeigh, asshole nonpariel, blew up
the Murrah Building, first thing I did was drive to the local
Red Cross and empty my pockets of whatever change
I had (about $35). I was told that a local tv reporter was
in the building, and that he might want to interview me.
I politely declined, preferring anonymity over celebrity.
It seemed dishonest to do otherwise.

I learned something new today. I still prefer direct donations
but it appears UW has improved in more ways than one.
With the huge donations UW gets from corporate America
I'm glad they have progressed beyond just a collection agency.
