The Rumaila oil field, which holds the largest crude oil reserves in
Iraq, is secure, said U.K. military officials who asked not to be
named.
In the south, as many as 30 oil wells are on fire, Hoon told the BBC.
Oil well fires can take months to be extinguished.
Iraqi oil-well heads are burning at the Rumaila field near the Kuwait
border.
``The black cloud seen covering the skies of Kuwait is caused by the
burning of oil wells in southern Iraq, set ablaze by Iraqi forces,''
Kuwait's KUNA news service cited the head of the national
environmental agency, Mohammed al-Sarawi, as saying.

Let's hope most of the other major wells are spared. Iraq is extremely
fortunate, compared to someplace like Afghanistan, to be sitting on a gold
mine that will readily finance the rebuilding of their nation. That will
make their recovery so much easier. They would be fools to squander it.

Since Texas oil companies generally don't send their bills
out-of-country (there are exceptions), we can assume this is an
American.
But "His NOT such a moron".

Why does the stock of a company about to go bankrupt jump 250% ? ? ?
Here's a start:
http://www.thebullandbear.com/bb-reporter/bbfr-archive/boots.html
........................
"Boots & Coots responds to more than 50 critical well control calls a
month. Pre-positioned well control specialists mobilize within an hour
to respond anywhere in the world. Halliburton routinely assists in
getting needed equipment mobilized within 24 hours. Once onsite and
equipped, the Boots & Coots response team quickly assesses the
situation, removes the debris, extinguishes the blaze, caps the well,
and coordinates environmental monitoring, clean-up and recovery."
......................
Well isn't that handy!
One of Cheney's first interests after becoming CEO of Halliburton was
in acquiring well-fire snuffing outfits. He formed the "strategic
alliance" with Boots&Coots called the "Well Control Alliance":
http://www.halliburton.com/oil_gas/sd1313.jsp
Since then, Halliburton and Boots&Coots have been sharing board
members, Halliburton execs becoming B&C CEOs on a regular basis.
Boots at one time worked for Halliburton, then learned his trade from
Red Adair.
A little more history:
http://moneycentral.msn.com/content/CNBCTV/Articles/TVReports/P42827.asp
..........................(Boots Hansen, who sold the privately-held
company to the publicly-traded "International Well Control"):.
"I was completely surprised that anyone would go on the stock market
with a service company like that, only, you know, if the phone rings,
you're going to make money. If the phone don't ring, you're not going
to make money," he says.
Looking back, many shareholders would probably agree.
For more than three years, the company has been flirting with
bankruptcy, and battling against delisting from the American Stock
Exchange. Nonetheless, Boots & Coots will apparently play a leading
role if there are fires to put out in a new gulf war.
Last week, the Pentagon disclosed that a unit of Halliburton (HAL,
news, msgs), the oil service company formerly run by Vice President
Dick Cheney, had put together the plan that'll be used to secure
Iraq's oilfields. Boots & Coots has had a business relationship with
Halliburton since 1995, the year Cheney took over as CEO.
CNBC has learned the word has gone out in the industry that Boots &
Coots will be project manager for the firefighting effort. Both
companies refuse to discuss that, and a Pentagon spokesman says
details of the firefighting plan are classified.
For months now, as the threat of war has grown, Boots & Coots has
become a favorite of speculators, a major topic on the Internet
message boards. It has consistently been one of the most active stocks
on the American Stock Exchange.
................................
A "business relationship" with Halliburton, indeed!

Halliburton wins contract on Iraq oil firefighting
Thu March 6, 2003 08:31 PM ET
HOUSTON, March 6 (Reuters) - A Halliburton Co. HAL.N subsidiary
Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR) has won the contract to oversee any
firefighting operations at Iraqi oilfields after any U.S.-led
invasion, a Defense Department source said on Thursday.
KBR was widely viewed by many in the oilfield services industry as the
likely candidate to oversee firefighting in Iraq's oilfields.
Halliburton does extensive logistic support work for the U.S.
military.
Vice President Dick Cheney served as Halliburton's chief executive
officer from 1995 to 2000,
A possible beneficiary of Thursday's deal is oilwell firefighting
company Boots & Coots International Well Control Inc., with which
Halliburton has had an alliance since 1995.
A Halliburton spokeswoman declined comment and referred all questions
to the Defense Department.
...and in the current phenomenon in which stock results are being
almost as closely watched as the Invasion itself (no, it's not just
about oil):

Boots&Coots shares dive as few Iraqi wells on fire
Fri March 21, 2003 12:01 PM
Dave Simpson
Last go round there were a dozen or more countries that took part
in putting out the oil fires. The russians came up with the best
idea, mounting jet engines from a surplus Mig on the frame of a T-62
tank and BLEW the fires out!Pretty friggin smart for eurotrash!!
Please note, there has NEVER been a sustained free market for oil. It has
always been conrolled, taxed, or protected. OPEC is modeled after the Texas
Rail Rad Commision.
Many believe that Bush will set the price of oil at a steady $20-$25 a barrel.
This will keep prices fairly low, but still high enough to make a profit for
oil produced off shore and in ANWR.
Of course it is about oil. But we don't know the "plan" yet.
Does anyone take issue with this? If so, how?
By the time the U.S. companies are done feeding at the trough, there
won't be enough left over to buy canvas tents for the survivors.
