While Barack Obama takes a rare opportunity to act like a president,
Bill Clinton, who was actually pretty good at that, is hitting the
campaign trail "for" Obama. And as usual, Clinton is subtly undermining
Obama. RealClearPolitics has yesterday's sound bite of choice:
"I saw the reports of Governor Romney's latest ad saying that
the president had allowed Jeep to move to China. And so this
morning, before he left Florida and went back to Washington,
he said, 'You know, of all the things Governor Romney has said
that probably hurts my feelings the most.' He said, 'You know,
I never had any money when I was a kid. And the first new car
I ever owned I was 30 years old it was a Jeep,' " former
President Bill Clinton said at a campaign event in Ohio
[yesterday].
Remember "I thought he was going to cry"? Once again Clinton depicts
Obama as a weak and thin-skinned man given to lachrymose outbursts any
time he is slighted.
The previous day, the Connecticut Mirror reports, Clinton was in
Waterbury campaigning for Rep. Chris Murphy, who is seeking Joe
Lieberman's Senate seat:
"We're coming down to the 11th hour. We're facing a violent
storm," Clinton said. He waited a beat, then added, "It's
nothing compared to the storm we'll face if you don't make
the right decision in this election."
This wasn't an appearance for Obama, but one suspects Clinton would have
been more careful about making light of a natural disaster if his own
re-election were on the line.

iceberg a second time."
