Many European nations (though not their intellectual elite) have envied

unemployment rate in the U.S. is lower than any other industrialized
nation except Japan.
Many poor folks are in jail on various DRUG charges. But even
conservatives (like the National Review magazine) have begun to
criticize the so-called "War on Drugs". So have libertarians (don't
know how King Pineapple feels himself though).
OTOH, the Clinton Administration devised the so-called "Plan Colombia"
which may get us involved in a shooting war in Colombia, in the name of
stopping drugs.
