Google also algorythemically indexes "google news" links to try
to offer some degree of fairness while catering to relevence.

There really never has been any rhyme or reason for themed
changes to their main page. I think it happens when someone
gets a bright idea and it is approved. But I've never really
thought that they had an obligation to give special
recognition to any particular day.

Google is a public corporation, meaning that, if you have a better idea
for their direction, you can buy influence. Yes, it may be beyond your
financial means to do it, but you aren't denied the option. By a
controlling interest in the company, and make it adhere to what YOU
think would be the best policy in the interest of shareholder value.
