A PORTRAIT OF AMERICA'S ENEMIES

October 21, 2002 --
A ceasefire signed last week in Nairobi brings a pause to the brutal 20-year
civil war in Sudan, the largest country in Africa.

That war is yet another manifestation of the cruelty of America's Islamic
fundamentalist and terrorist enemies, and provides an insight into what those
enemies are fighting to achieve.

Sudan is ruled by an Islamic fundamentalist military regime based in the Arab,
predominantly Muslim north of the country.

This regime has long sought to impose the Arabic language and Islamic religion
on the black peoples of the south, who are mostly Christians and animists. This
campaign fostered a rebellion and famines that have cost nearly 2 million
lives.

If that weren't bad enough, the government has also armed and backed Arab
militias that raid black villages to take women and children as slaves.

That's right, slaves.

Up to 15,000 people are held as slaves in the Sudan, and more have been traded
to other Arab countries.

Though slavery has been endemic in the Sudan for thousands of years, today it
thrives because of the government's encouragement.

And the brutal persecution of Christians (not an issue that concerns the
mainstream media), from floggings to forced conversions, is a regular feature
of life in all the areas still controlled by the government.

All this sounds like a medieval nightmare.

But it is modern reality - and worth bearing in mind as America and the West
continue to confront challenges leveled by ruthless Islamist fanatics.

"The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That
is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and
denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the
country to danger. It works the same in any country." - Herman
Goering (second in command to Adolf Hitler) at the Nuremberg Trials

"Today Christians ... stand at the head of Germany ... I pledge that I
never will tie myself to parties who want to destroy Christianity ..
We want to fill our culture again with the Christian spirit ... We want
to burn out all the recent immoral developments in literature, in the
theater, and in the press - in short, we want to burn out the poison
of immorality which has entered into our whole life and culture as
a result of liberal excess during the past ... (few) years." - Hitler
