The Yiddish British: From Shylock To Lord

remarkably enough, Shakespeare, his creator, never even met a Jew - ever. (Of
course, if it's true that Shakespeare was really Sir Francis Bacon writing
under a pseudonym, as some scholars suggest, Jews would assuredly have had
nothing to do with him for obvious reasons!) England, as we've already noted,
expelled all of its Jews in 1290. It would take almost 400 years, until 1656,
that the Jews would finally be allowed to return, during the time of Oliver
Cromwell. The people who were portrayed in the most unflattering manner on the
Elizabethan stage would have to struggle to gain acceptance and fight mightily-
sometimes even with their fists, as well will discover - in order to gain equal
rights. English Jewry lagged behind French and German Jews as well as others
who had an early "continental breakfast" of equality. But as a result of their
great contributions to English society and the role they played in British
culture, the Shylocks of Shakespeare eventually became the Rothschilds, the
Disrealis, the Montefiores, and the Lords.
YOU CAN GO HOME AGAIN
England proved that Thomas Wolfe was wrong: Sometimes you can go home again.
In the thirteenth century, Jews were expelled from English shores and condemed
as blood-sucking moneylenders and blood-drinking ritual murderers. But England
changed its mind in the seventeenth century for the most incredible of reasons.
The Jews had to come back to that Messiah would come! The reasoning was the
remarkable brainchild of a prominent rabbi in Amsterdam, Menasseh Ben Israel
(1604-1657). The rabbi was such an impressive figure that Rembrandt's famous
portrait of him makes him the only rabbi I know with a multimillion-dollar
face. Obviously, his gift for persuasion was equally great because he convinced
Oliver Cromwell that England, with its exclusionary policy towards Jews, was
delaying the "final coming of Messiah," based on a verse in the Book of Daniel.
The Biblical prophesy was that the Jews had to be scattered "from one end of
the earth to the other before the redemption could be realized." As long as
there were placed where Jews were not allowed to live, the prophecy could not
be fulfilled." The puritans were then in power and were persuaded. So, for one
of the few times in history, a sermon brought about a change in national
policy- and Jews were told they could return in order to hasten the "End Of
Days."
ON THE TRUE FAITH OF A CHRISTIAN
But Being allowed to live in England wasn't the same as being granted equal
rights. With extraordinary skill, some Jews acquired great wealth. There were
financiers like ISAAC GOLDSMID, NATHAN ROTHSCHILD, DAVID SALOMONS, and MOSES
MONTEFIORE, WHOSE FORTUNES HELPED ENGLAND BECOME AN EMPIRE, but whose faith
prevented them from being given the power of a voice in Parliament. When the
bill "For the Repeal of the Civil Disabilities of the Jew" came up for a vote,
Lord Macaulay fought for the bill's passage. He put it bluntly, saying, "How is
it possible to deny a ROTHSCHILD a seat, on the grounds of his race, when his
signature on the bacl of a piece of paper is worth more than the royal word of
three kings!" But the House of Lords threw the bill out. As late as the
mid-ninteenth century, Jews knew that even if they were ever elected to any
office they would not be able to serve because of the Oath of Allegiance they
would be required to take "on the truth faith of Christian." Lionel Rothschild
continued to run for office, be elected, and yet was unable to take his seat in
the House of Commons for more than ten years because he refused to take the
oath and deny his heritage. It wasn't until 1858 that a ROTHSCHILD could
finally serve in Parliament "on the true faith of a believing Jew."
THE BLANK PAGE - THE JEWISH PRIME MINISTER
Religious bigotry, however, wasn't based on race - as it would be a century
later in Nazi Germany. Jews could escape the restrictions placed on them if
they were ready to sacrifice allegiance to their heritage. No better example of
this was BENJAMIN DISRAELI (1804-1881) who was baptized at age twelve into the
Church of England by his novelist father in order to improve his chances for
success. He became Chancellor of the Exchequer and then twice Prime Minister.
DISRAELI knew that as a Jew he would have never been able to say, as he did at
the end of his life, "Yes, I have climbed to the top of the greasy pole." But
even though baptized, he never forgot his origins. When taunted by the Irish
Roman Catholic leader Daniel O' Connell in the House of Commons, with insulting
aspersions to his Jewish ancestry, DISRAELI fired back a memorable response:
"Yes, I am a Jew, and when the ancestors of the right honorable gentleman were
brutal savages in an unknown island, mine were priests in the Temple of
Solomon." Queen Victoria couldn't help but being puzzled by her Prime Minister
who, although converted into the Angilican faith, never cut his ties to the
Jewish people. When she asked him to explain, he told her: "Your Majesty, you
know that in most editions of the Holy Bible there is the Old Testament and
then there is the New Testament, and in between the two there is an empty,
blank page. I am that blank page."
THE JEWISH SHERIFF
Not everyone had to convert to at least get close to the top. How about this
for a great scene in a movie? "Get the sheriff," someone yells, and out steps
an Orthodox Jew whose name is...Moses! As improbable as it sounds, MOSES
MONTEFIORE (1784-1885) was not only Sheriff of London, but also became the
personal financial advisor to Queen Victoria. He had led the way for the
industrial development of Great Britain and was responsible for illuminating
London's streets by his Imperial Continental Gas Association, bringing a new
twist to the ideal of Isaiah that the Jews become "a light unto the nations."
He founded the PROVINICIAL BANK OF IRELAND and a number of other leading
banking institutions. His greatest talent, however, was not in knowing how to
make money, but how to spend it wisely. His philanthropy reached every corner
of the world, and it's hard to find placed that weren't bestowed with his
charitable gifts. For his contributions, he was the first Jew even to be
knighted by the Queen. After over three thousand years, Moses had finally
become a lord!!
BOXING WITH BRAINS: THE JEWISH CONTRIBUTION
Not every Jew had the talent of MONTEFIORE, the brilliance of DISRAELI, or the
riches of ROTHSCHILD. In an England where Jew-hatred had a long history,
survival in the streets often meant having to prove yourself with your fists
when attacked by anti-Semites. And if you still think that nice Jewish boys
don't know how to fight, you'll be amazed to learn that the father of modern
scientific boxing is DANIEL MENDOZA (1764-1836), an East End Jew who fought
under the professional name of "Star of Israel." Mendoza was able to beat
opponents who were much bigger and stronger because he invented a new style of
defense, a technique called "side-stepping." Jews had been trying to avoid
punches for centuries. Mendoza adapted this cultural trait and turned it into a
boxing technique. Some purists who thought boxing was all punches and no
tactics criticized Mendoza for this "cowardly" kind of fighting. But the "Star
of Israel" knew that even in boxing, brains will beat brawn, and he became the
champion - as well as hero of English plays and song and creatore of a new kind
of respect for his people. In 1965, Daniel Mendoza was one of the inaugural
groups chosen for the Boxing Hall of Fame in the United Staes as a "father of
modern boxing." Of all the Jewish contributions to modern culture, that one
must have been the most unlikely!
OTHER HEROES AND LORDS
While a boxer helped elevate the image of the Jew for the masses, other Jews of
taklent also made names for themselves, which reflected very positively on
their people:
* One of the greatest of all English actors was Edmund Kean.
* The astronomer William Herschel is considered by many on a par with Galileo.
* David Rocardo, who developed the theory of the Iron Law of Wages, is rankd on
the top rung of political economics.
* Sir Rufus Isaacs was Lord Chief Justice of England and eventually Viceroy of
all of India.
* Sir Herbert Samuel, leader of the Liberal Party, was an industrial magnate.
an accomplished philosopher, and the first British High Commissioner for
Palestine. But one of the greatest English heroes acquired a dramatic Jewish
distinction as well: The scientist who helped England win World War I would
eventually become the first president of the State of Israel.
FROM BRITISH SUBJECT TO ISRAELI PRESIDENT
Chaim Weizmann (1874-1952) was a brilliant chemist. In 1915, England faced a
critical shortage of acetone for explosives, and Weizmann figured out a way to
produce it synthetically from ordinary chestnuts, which were plentiful in
England. In gratitude the English government wanted to make Weizmann a knight.
Instead of this personal honor, he pleaded that the British government proclaim
its willingness to support the idea of a Jewish homeland in Palestine. It was
an unbelievable request, but remarkable enough, in 1917, the British issued the
Balfour Delcaration, making the first time a world power threw its weight
behind the idea of a Jewish return to Palestine. It was an explosive document -
a fitting payback to the man who saved England with his formula for explosives.
And the man who turned down a knighthood so that he could help his people would
later be granted the privilege of being elected, in May, 1948, the first
president of Israel.
