I'd like to try taking these - do you need a special type of camera or film?

Its all done with software. Well, mostly.

Autostitch is free, does good work, doesn't allow for much tweaking. PTGui
is better, has a trial version.

Its lots of fun.

Much easier these days using digital cameras. I produce some really high
quality panoramic prints, up to 12 inches high by 12 feet long, using a
Canon 10D (6M pixel). Software that came with the camera stiches together as
many images as you have to produce a very wide image.

A good tripod with a bubble level and I have always stitched em in Photoshop
manually. There are some good tutorials out there on how to.
