It is unlikely that any of the usual card readers will work. Look to
the Apple proprietary item.

Connecting the camera will work fine with the appropriate Lightning to
USB cable. The transfer is relatively quick, just make sure you have a
reasonably charged, or freshly charged battery in your camera.
Remember, it is always a good idea to have a spare battery available.

With the iPad and Apple's 30-pin (pre-Lightning) Camera Connect Kit you
can transfer image files from an SD, SDHC card. The kit also has a USB
module which will work for camera to iPad transfer via USB. The USB
module only works for some USB card readers due to power requirements.
Of the various card readers I own, I have yet to find one which works
with the iPad.
The iPads using the Lightning connector are sold as two separate items,
a short cable connected to a female USB connector, and a short cable
connected to an SD card reader. Each priced at $29.
The older 30-pin kit comes with a non-cable interface with both modules
for $29. A 30-pin to Lightning adapter is $29.

With the iPads requiring the Lightning connector your first
consideration is the type of memory card used in your camera. If you
are only using SD/SDHC cards then just buy the Lightning to SD card
reader. Don't bother trying to use a third party card reader to the
Lightning to USB cable.

If you have a camera which uses CF cards Then you have two options
either use the USB cable supplied with your camera to Apple's Lightning
to USB connector, or transfer from your desktop/laptop computer via
software.

I have cameras which use both types of memory cards and I use Apple's
SD card reader without issue for SDHC cards. For my Nikon D300S which
uses CF cards, image files from that camera are loaded to my desktop
Mac, processed, and selected images are transferred to my iPad via
"Photo Transfer App". This is also a useful method if you only want to
add images to your iPad which you have adjusted and edited on your
desktop/laptop computer.
