Yes.
Coreldraw.
This comes in the form of a suite of programs that the two main programs
are:
* Photopaint - a more powerful, easy to use and versatile photo and
graphics editor than Photoshop. Photopaint does NOT come free with a camera.
* Coreldraw - the "main" program that is primarily a page layout and
vector graphic editing program. Very useful for creating flyers,
leaflets and posters. A lot of CNC engraving machines can run directly
off Corel CDR files. It can probably do a lot more than that, but that's
mainly what I've used it for

There are a large number of smaller "helper" applications in the
Coreldraw suite as well, including Coreltrace (converts bitmap to vector
graphics) and a Barcode Wizard.

If you are a student, it can be purchased relativley cheaply for around
US $100.

thanks for the responce...
the image was only minimally processed...

it was just cropped a little at the bottom...
then put through one transform to electronically solarize...

i could say that i'm a believer in minimal software processing...
or i could say my abilities to use the software are rather limited <G>

corelDraw rules.

I'd also chime in with corel Painter, which i use near exclusively over
photoshop when the situation calls for a lot of brushwork.

That and it comes free with a wacom tablet most of the time, the
cheapest of which is probably still in the $100 range. The sensetivity
isn't great, but god help me if i ever have to do a mask with anything
but a pen tablet. :]

sorry for the double post, but while on the topic of gimp, you might
also want to check out gimpshop:

mac: http://plasticbugs.com/?page_id=294
PC: http://www.plasticbugs.com/blogimg/GIMPshop_0.1beta_Setup.exe

which is gimp for mac or PC, but altered to work and feel more like
photoshop.

paint shop pro is a pretty ubiquitous "poor man's photoshop", though i
know tons of pro-texture art guys that prefer it to PS, so what do i
know :]
