The tartan wallpaper makes me cringe. There was no obvious route to
Edinburgh pictures. I thought the map of Scotland would be clickable -
it's quite easy to achieve in just about any web editing software.

To summarize, most of us understand that you are trying a theme website.
Your problem, like the problem with many "theme" sites, is that the
background interferes with the photos.
Decide what you want, theme or photo. If you want a theme, try to stay away
from the clichīŋŊs.

I don't usually respond to these, mostly because it is unclear as to
whether your aim is to highlight your photos, highlight Scotland,
highlight your writing, or highlight your web design.

However, as this is alt.photography I'll assume you wish to highlight
your photos.

Just a few differences between your site, http://c.j.photos.tripod.com/,
and your friend's site http://tonerland.yolasite.com/:

Home page
Tonerland: navigation by city/region first thing you see
C.J.: navigation "below the fold" (second screen scroll down) and
organized by "gallery 1", "gallery 2" etc., with no info on what may be
there

Tonerland: very simple, visually striking, no scroll
C.J.: unreadable title, scrolls three screens down, lots of little
clashing elements, lots of different fonts and colors, distracting
background, unclear just what is clickable

(Tonerland) Edinburgh / (C.J.) Gallery 1
Tonerland: opens in the same window, all thumbnails are visible in
three screens, possibly superfluous map and weather data, each thumbnail
is a link to flickr and opens in a lightbox window overlaid on the
thumbnails
C.J.: Gallery opens in a new window, is 16 screens deep and
apparently is only one of 9 pages according to the navigation bar. Text
is red on tartan, illegible, too big -- it breaks poorly leaving every
third line or so with one word, centered. The clip art picture frames
and "brass" labels detract mightily from the photos. More colors and
fonts than necessary.

A hint here: if you don't want to hear other peoples' opinions it's best
not to ask for them.

Yes, we all understand that we all work hard, work long hours, and that
there is a learning curve for everything related to photography and web
design. However, consider this:

Your home page http://c.j.photos.tripod.com/ has 729 lines of html code.
Your friend's http://tonerland.yolasite.com/ has 342 lines -- actually
190 lines after I ran it through HTML Tidy to remove the gaps the
template put in as place holders.

Further, you use tables to place elements and he uses css, which can be
more easily edited to update the entire site's look. He is using a
template set that works well. If you are using a template set it isn't
doing what you want -- if what you want is to highlight your photography.

Standards checking at w3.org <http://validator.w3.org/> reveals the
following:
Tonerland: "58 Errors, 9 warning(s), Doctype XHTML 1.0 Strict"

C.J.: "The following notes and warnings highlight missing or
conflicting information which caused the validator to perform some
guesswork prior to validation. If the guess or fallback is incorrect, it
could make validation results entirely incoherent. It is highly
recommended to check these potential issues, and, if necessary, fix them
and re-validate the document."
"No DOCTYPE Declaration could be found or recognized in this
document. This generally means that the document is not declaring its
Document Type at the top. It can also mean that the DOCTYPE declaration
contains a spelling error, or that it is not using the correct syntax."

Even the most basic templates will insert a Doctype at the beginning of
the document. Without it browsers have no way to know what standards to
follow when rendering your site, and will definitely cause errors major
enough to affect the viewers' experience, up to and including rendering
a blank screen.

So the first questions that come to mind are, is it a photo site, a
travel site, a blog, or some combination? Why do you feel the need to
use a "catchy" background, multiple fonts, multiple colors, and
amateurish clip art? Would it be better to research template-based
websites or mega photo sites like flickr or picassa rather than try to
reinvent the wheel?

Only you know the answers to these questions, and the answers might help
steer you in the direction _you_ want to go.

Best of luck,

K

I have been enjoying the many pictures on your site, thanks for sharing.
While many of my pictures are not anywhere near the quality that your are, I
recently tried to do the same, only to confronted with more negative
comments about my doing so, than receiving much help and advice. Some simply
chose to find the worst of the worst, then simple summed the rest of my
pictures up as nothing but crap. Yet, in all fairness though, I did receive
some good feedback from a few people, offering some ideas for me to improve
a number of the better images.

Likewise, I seemed to attract a different group who choose to respond than
you did; yet, sometimes the hypocrites do tend to surface in an exercise
such as this. But this doesn't seem to be the case here, and I have been
learning far more just looking at your pictures. They are very good.

I did learn another valuable lesson as well, and even though I was a bit
surprised that my efforts to share some general vacation pictures, was
termed as nothing more than 'snaps' in an unacceptable album format, I am
finding that this has been no problem with some others, including yourself.
Of course, this may have more to so with 'who's who' and the caliber of
pictures. Because of this, I did pick out just one picture from each of the
groups that I submitted, and seriously took into consideration some of the
more helpful comments on them from those that did respond. I'll be
presenting them soon.

Meantime, I have been in private communication with another in reference to
this exercise, and who shared some good ideas with me, minus this particular
newsgroup. Sometimes, suggestions without some of the pessimistic dialogue
can accomplish far more towards improvements. I can see that you have
developed a more productive philosophy, which obviously shows in your
photography. I would hope that we can communicate more in the future in this
reference. I think you would be a excellent teacher.

Thanks for the quick and personal reply Cameron, it is indeed appreciated.
For the most part, I too have been trying not to let the hecklers get me
down. Actually, one can even learn something from negative comments, if they
look at what they may actually be trying to say. Based on this, and that you
apparently had no problem, in the future, I may try another photo album
containing many of my pictures to share. However, if I did learn anything,
it was to indeed be a bit more selective in what I put out there. Believe
me, that will be no problem.

Out of curiosity, what is your job and what brings you to Scotland so often?
Ironically, both my wife Deborah and I are half Irish, yet neither of us
have even been to Ireland. We do hope to get there sometime in the not too
distant future. However, we are booked on a cruise to Northern Europe and
the Baltic's this coming April, but both Ireland and Scotland are not in
this schedule, and will therefore have to wait a bit.

The reason why I bring this up, and as I pointed out before on this
newsgroup, a cruise vacation is not always the ideal situation for serious
photography; most of the time, more of a point and shoot schedule. This is
because, and for the most part, our priority is to see and learn something
new about the countries and places we visit, while learning more about the
culture, and making serious photography somewhat secondary in nature. Yet,
this very exercise with this newsgroup, showed me that perhaps instead of a
quick shore excursion and/or organized tour somewhere, we can go just go to
one particular place on our own while in port, with some serious photography
in mind. This would be a welcome change for us anyway, especially if we have
been to the same destination a few times before. In addition, we need to
take the ship we're on itself at bit more serious as far as photography is
concerned. We should have enough time to do that as well.

While we have been to many places, this will actually be our 20th cruise.
Unlike someone on this newsgroup who said they don't want to hang around a
bunch of people who put their teeth in a glass every night, we too
originally were under this misconception before we seriously checked it out
and tried our very first cruise. Deborah was 33 years old at the time - I
was a bit older. Since that time, we even stared our own cruise travel
agency, for booking anyone at all on a cruise vacation. There are even theme
cruises available, one actually being photography. Ironically, we have yet
to ever give that a try. Obviously, that's an oversight on our part.

Now back to your photography of Scotland. Your pictures have been the most
inspiration to me in reference to serious photography and composing a good
picture. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words. Likewise, it is far
better than those only criticizing the work of others, yet putting nothing
out there as an example of what they mean. The only thing learn from that is
to avoid their dialogue if at all possible.

I may, if you will, send you just one of my pictures to see what you
personally think. This would be one of the ones originally contained within
one of my albums, but has been enhanced and reformatted based on the more
helpful ideas and suggestion receive from a few other from this particular
exercise. I feel this way, I can get a serious evaluation of a productive
nature, instead of simply attracting more trolls.

Thanks again...

Talking about someone in the third person openly, or gossiping like a dirty

I don't consider Charles H. to be a troll in any way. He's a regular
poster who, presumably, uses his real name and offers genuine opinions
and observations based on his reaction to certain posts.

I disagree with many of his opinions and think many of his
observations are wrongly-footed and without merit. It still may be a
waste of pixels to respond to him, but it's quite different from
encouraging a troll.

They seem to hold and encourage a feeling of peacefulness. I love

sounds an interesting life you lead. travel is always

good fun.

Although i do have some formal training as i had to

other dead trade due to the advent of digital photography

i spent many years working for the Edinburgh (my home)

repair shops and learnt the technicalities of most of the

so i would be delighted to see some of you're work.

use the 'contact us' tab on my web site to send them

and that will keep it private.

as for my job, at present i work for a selection of top car

manufacturers delivering new cars throughout Scotland and

northern England.. on Sunday past 2 of us had to deliver

an Audi a4 to a town called Lowick just a little south of

Berwick-upon-Tweed, but we had to collect a service car

from the borders town of Coldstream on the way down

so we went down through the middle of the Scottish borders

and nearly got the Audi stuck in the terrible snow that we were

experiencing over the last few days....the road was littered

with Audis that hadn't made it ! but luckily we weren't 1

of them LOL

Anyway John look forward to seeing ur' pics in my e-mail

I've got a few pictures of the place, but always interesting
to see other variations. What would be neat is if you could
get a few interior shots. I think you can tour the inside of it.
Or maybe get some a bit closer than the usual..
Lots of old history at that location from what I've read.
Probably not all good.. :/ IE: they had a prison there
down below for a period.
They say it can get pretty dark inside, so you would need some
extra light I imagine in order to take decent pictures inside.
I've noticed they advise visitors to bring a flash light with them.

Hi how are u.

your description of the castle is quite accurate as is with all

castles of this type. i tend not to do to muck interior stuff, only

if there is some unusual future, but some friends of mine were there earlier
this year and took a lot of pictures. ill ask to see them

and see if there's any i can send..but ive been meaning to go for

a while so now ive got a good excuse. when i go to a new place

i try to get some atmosphere ie: a stormy sky or a sunny day

with some nice clouds ( Dunottar looks best in a sea haar)

not always easy... ive had several failed trips, blanket cloud

just kills the photo leaves the image flat, and at about 100 a trip

this can be expensive. check out 'Lochan Urr' http://c.j.photos.tripod.com/
on my web site

ive been there about 7 times but the pictures ive published

were taken on 3 different occasions... that is 4 failed trips.. the

snow there is deep at the moment so i hope that will be my next

venture, but only if we get some sun here and my boss will let

me use 1 of the work service cars as i don't have 1 of my own lol.

anyway, keep an eye on my site and ill try to get there soon, its about 2hrs
drive away so i should manage it soon.

P.S. don't forget to sign the Guest Book.........

No problem, and no rush on it. I'm sure they will be worth
the wait if the weather is friendly to you. I think it can be
a bit fickle there on the coast at times.
I checked 3-4 of the Lochan Urr pictures. Really nice.
The large one with the purple flowers blooming looked
really good.
I checked out and signed your book. It's kind of interesting
that a previous signer was from Clan Gunn.
Clan Keith and Clan Gunn had a long running feud for
many years.. :/ It started in the 1400's.
But a truce was signed in about 1978 or so.
So we are all friendly now... lol..
