No matter how much investigating I did when I bought my new 50D ... I
still ran into a (minor) glitch...thanks to Adobe.

The new Canon camera uses a *different* RAW format than my old one

they no longer use CRW , now it's CR2 (sigh)

Adobe's CR2 plug-in does not work with Photoshop cs2 and below...they
want me to upgrade again. Sheesh

Canon is at least good enough to include a RAW program that can at least
be used to do any preliminary editing...
then save a TIFF to send to Photoshop to finish the job.

The real thing that steams me though is that the *free* software such as
IRFanview or GIMP have plugins for CR2 that can be installed in a matter
of seconds...and at no charge!

(end of venting, thank you)

camera raw is a *lot* more than support for a bunch of new cameras.

you can use adobe's free dng converter to convert the raw to dng (no
loss in quality) and you can then use the dng with cs2 and its version
of camera raw.

> The real thing that steams me though is that the *free* software such as

and they don't do anywhere near as much as what camera raw does.

Yep.

Photoshop is of course better than the free programs...
so we may be forced into upgrading again.

I did see the dng converter

but for now, using Canon's software to perform the pre-editing...
then saving as a TIFF and sending to Photoshop seems to do a good job

I can't believe that there is no converter for CS2. IIRC the CODEC to
convert should be available for download on your Canon site. Check Canon
support. I am surprised since you have no problem converting to a DNG and
Adobe still supports CS2.

I went to Adobe and downloaded the plug-in for CR2

but when I tryed to open a CR2 in Photoshop CS2 the error message is
that it's not supported. I searched around and saw that I need CS3 or above.

The Canon-provided software is sufficient for working with the CR2
format and any needed color corrections can be performed there.

Once that's done, the image can be sent as a TIFF and sent to Photoshop
for final editing and cropping etc..so there's a workable method in place.

However...an upgrade to CS4 will be needed to streamline the operation

I am sort of in the middle of this. I just got a G11 and the CR2 will
open in ACR with CS4, but the camera profile is still in beta and does
not give you the full processing flexibility yet.

I thought that converting to DNG with Lightroom might be a solution,
but even with the DNG the camera profiles are not available. For now
until Adoble updates ACR, the DNG convertor and Lightroom, it seems
working a combination of Canon's Digital Photo Professional and CS4 is
the only solution with the newer Canon CR2 files.

My NEF's work just fine.

Fortunately for most of the stuff I do the jpg (converted to TIFF) is
plenty good.
can usually get by without the need for RAW

When I go out on a "shoot" to gather material for a show...
I shoot as jpg then convert to TIFF and edit.

I print as 13" x 19"

OTOH: My fianc is an artist and will do prints of her oil paintings.
For those I use the raw format.

Then she will do the color corrections and editing.

We did our first test today and I shot with no tripod and no special
lighting in the studio.

The shooting was fast and painless...
then she did the color corrections using the Canon software.

Not sure if we achieved perfection on our first trial...but we sure got
the best results ever...plus, it was the least amount of work.

Personally speaking, this level of support and interoperability is bullshit.
The competition regulators ought to step in.

Other people have covered other options in this topic.

I could probably knock out a CR2 plugin but I'm too lazy. Um, dunno. Might
look into it tomorrow if I'm in a good mood.

I am quite sure the CR2 plug-in ...by design...works with CS2

I'd be willing to bet it simply has code in to prevent it from working
if version level is less than CS3

Just out of curiosity...I wonder what is better about cr2 than crw?
(if anything)

It is not so much the CR2, or NEF for that matter, it is the changes to
the full recognition of each camera variant and the struggle for Adobe
to catch up. Even if DNG was adopted by all manufacturers there would
still be a need for constant updates.

The last time I checked the SDK supports version limits. The API's and
resources would have to be examined to see if they've done that.

I'm just reading through the SDK. The file modules aren't included and I
have to file a special request. Great.

Canon do the EDSDK 2.6. I need to go through registration hoops to get that
and the Powershot SDK has been dropped.

The way this has been handled pisses me off as much as Microsoft crippling
Visual Studio 2005 support for "legacy" OS platforms.

Seriously, the advice you have been given is sound and good.
You can download Adobe's DNG converter for free, and that will allow you to
convert your current Canon CR2 format files to Adobe DNG format files.
You can then open and process these DNG's in Photoshop CS2.
This is a much more affordable solution than going out and buying CS4.

Well, we can still get the job done here...
and there are enough workarounds for me not to have to upgrade Photoshop
once again.(at least not yet)

For the most part I was just venting in that when I did tons of research
before I bought the new camera the one thing I never checked was to see
if the industry standards had changed for RAW

Yes

I use that and GIMP myself and I switched over to Linux full time at the
beginning of the year.

However my fiancé is a Photoshop die-hard.

When I watch her work...I have to admit that she can work more
efficiently when she uses Photoshop.

I'm glad you're okay with the workarounds. The more I dug the deeper the SDK
hole got, and I really didn't want to go down that road.

I don't think it's good enough and people have to realise that their success
is about the customer's success, not walled gardens and profiteering.

Thanks for the reply.

We are going to run a few more tests this afternoon after I get home
from work...it's possible we don't need RAW format at all.

Bottom line is: How does the print look?

If you live in the UK check how much it will cost to sign up for an OU
course and then get a student or educational license for CS4, compared
with getting a full-price upgrade.

Certainly for those of us that didn't have a copy of Photoshop to
upgrade, the academic route is much cheaper so long as you pick your
course by price.

Have you tried:
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=windows

I have Photoshop CS and a Canon 30D. Using the combination of:
DNG_Camera_Raw_4_1.zip
and
Camera_Raw_2_4.zip
works for me. Perhaps using a different combination will help in your case.
N.B. the "Camera Raw.8bi" within the "DNG_Camera_Raw_4_1.zip" doesn't work
in CS. It may work in CS2, but I don't know for sure.
I arrived at this by downloading all the DNG converters and Camera Raws from
http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/product.jsp?product=106&platform=windows
I then trial and errored until it worked.

Maybe I didn't explain clearly enough my workflow.
Convert to DNG with the converter.
Open the DNG in Photoshop. With CS, I cannot directly open the CR2 file and
only the DNG works.
Hey, I'm no expert, but I try to get the stuff I have to work.

Yes Canon's DPP works a lot better than I expected considering its
price, for pictures that don't need much tweaking I use it standalone
then if needed as you say export to TIFF for further work. Canon's
sharpening algorithm is especially good, though slow.

OK I'm a cheapskate, I use Corel Draw/Photopaint/Painter and GIMP over
Adobe stuff. IMO Adobe like Quark market to the sort of people who can
afford endless expensive upgrades and expect anyone who can't/don't
want to afford them to stick with Elements.

Best of both worlds!

I've done some "artistic" manipulations with GIMP that none of my
other programs approached. But I have to readjust my brain every time
I use the funky interface.

Oh I forgot Xara, that also has some functions you have difficulty
finding elsewhere, you can do some mindblowing manipulations with
transparency.

I hated GIMP at first but eventually got used to it.

I do not do any complicated manipulations...

mainly just color correction and cropping...

once in a while I'll go for some "special" effect

but nothing requiring more than a couple minutes of work
