So I got this Pacsafe TravelSafe 12L "anti-theft" bag for about $65.
It says it will hold up to a 15.4" laptop, which I tested with my old
Toshiba A105. On the trip, we'll be taking a 10.1" and also a 11.6"
netbook.
I took some pictures of the bag tied up in the trunk of my 2001
Pontiac Grand Prix. Here's the gallery -

So far, I'm really impressed with the bag. They do have actual camera
bags but I thought this would be more versatile for the variety of
stuff I'm taking. The Pacsafe site is http://www.Pacsafe.com.

Hi Paul!
I've travelled with about $6 000 worth of equipment in my camera bag (Canon
5D Mark II with assorted lenses) that looks like a pack sac. Last time was
in September in Paris. I've done the same in Rome and other big cities. I
never had any problem. However, if I sat down at a table in a restaurant, I
would set it on an unoccupied chair (of course...) ensuring I had it
strapped securely. I would also take appropriate action in other
circumstances such as if a stranger started talking to me while I was
waiting to be served, etc. The gear you have gives a clear message: "This is
costly material. It's almost an invitation to take a crack at it. My
opinion, better to stuff your things in an innocuous container such as a
pack sac. Everyone has one. Nobody thinks twice about it.
Cheers,
Marcel
