Communism took hold, not in advanced Capitalist societies (all of which
were Majority religious societies where religious intellectual and
economic freedoms went in parallel) but in underdeveloped peasant

The Atheism of North Korea and those other states is a State Religion,
and, like all state religions, whether theist or atheist, is corrupting

Atheism, when optional, is certainly no more evil than theist religions,

I have had two answers to theist ravings about atheism leading to
totalitarian states.

1. If one counts as atheist states those that operate as if atheism
were true, that would include practically all the existing
democracies, those relatively benign governments that have no high
priests, no ayatollahs, no oracles, no officials who officially
proclaim the will of the Almighty.

2. At every step of the way, those totalitarian governments that do
build up high body counts with their official policy of mass murder
have been aided and abetted by religious leaders who condemn
resistance to the carnage.

Such examples include Mohandas Gandhi who urged Great Britain to
surrender to Nazi Germany during World War II and who urged Jews to
commit mass suicide, to throw themselves off the hills and cliffs of
Europe into the sea, in effect, saving the Nazis the expense and
effort to exterminate them.

While Gandhi sided with the Nazis during World War II, his protege
Martin Luther King sided with the communists during the Vietnam War,
urging unilateral disarmament and condemning all resistance.
