Why the human mind evolved? Intelligence is not a by-product of surplus
brain size, it actively evolved, like the peacock's tail, for courtship and
mating, and thereby shaped human nature.
Why does our species tell jokes, build monuments, compose sonatas, give to
charity, compete in sports, follow fashion? Our endless inventiveness, our
elaborate culture, seem to defy Darwinian explanation. They are our sexual
ornaments, our peacocks' tails, displaying our value to potential mates.
Consciousness, morality, creativity, language, and art: these are the traits
that make us human. Scientists have traditionally explained these qualities
as merely a side effect of surplus brain size, but they are rally sexual
attractors, not side effects. This argument is based on Darwin's theory of
sexual selection, which until now has played second fiddle to Darwin's
theory of natural selection, and draws on ideas and research from a wide
range of fields, including psychology, economics, history, and pop culture.
Sexual selection theory rather than natural selection-- is a theory about
how the human mind has developed the sophistication of a peacock's tail to
encourage sexual choice and the refining of art, morality, music, and
literature. Mate choice, male or female may be the reason we have art and
possibly even the (self).
Why human brains have so much capacity for creativity, language, and
consciousness-- are not fully explained by Darwinian natural selection, but
sexual selection by mate choices for and by breeding brutes. Sexual
Selection, Darwin's 'other' theory, has finally come in from the cold and is
now one of the hottest topics in modern Darwinism. The idea that the human
mind evolved as a sort of software peacock's tail has been mooted before,
usually to be dismissed in favor of some alternative theory.
That large personalities can be as sexually enticing as oversize breasts or
biceps may indeed prove comforting, but denuding sexual chemistry can be a
curiously unsexy business, akin to analyzing humor. As a courting display of
my own arogent intellectual plumage, though, my ideas are an
agent-provocateur an chest swelled with ideas and articulate conjecture.
While occasionally my magpie instinct may loot fool's gold, overall it
provides an accessible and attractive insight into modern Darwinism and the
survival of the sexiest. Join me now as we go down in spectacular flames.
Open up, and become a full-throated exponent of evolutionary psychology,
while being enamored with the prospect of totally explaining the creative
and moral attributes of the mind. The mind as a multiplex cybernet
playground some fill with dread to block it's persuasive powers on other
multi media functionality.
Harken, for we have evolved through the string of human sexual selections
that reaches back to the cave-dwelling days of the Pleistocene. So if you
think you make art for aesthetic reasons or behave nicely for altruistic
ones, I beg to dissuade you. These and other expressions of personality are
all display devices, withing the entertainment systems that the mind is, for
attracting a mate.
Dont suffer discomfort at my reduction of the personally felt human
uniqueness--whether in language, sympathy and empathy, morality, or
creativity--into another cog in the organism's sex machine!
A huge proportion of the male brain is occupied by machinery dedicated to
dating lots and lots of women. In contrast, the female brain is filled with
defense mechanisms to fend off cads. Are men really from Mars, and women
from Venus? Yes, and the reason is quite simple: sexual selection has
designed the sexes differently, and not just their bodies, but their brains.
Violence is a deeply entrenched behavioral strategy--especially among
males--that (simply emerges) when other strategies fail. While culture and
socialization play important roles in encouraging violence, ignoring the
powerful biological and evolutionary forces at work is "the single most
useless--and dangerous--approach one could take in trying to explain human
violence.
If one methodically details our grim heritage of, rape, murder, war, and
genocide, from wilding metropolitans to wild gorillas, understanding and
admitting to the biological origins of violence, we will be better prepared
to deal with it.
Are males are born to be violent? Yes! Aggression is programmed by our DNA.
Can anything be done about it. Again, yes. Our intelligence, self-awareness,
morality, and culture make us the most amazing and capable beings in the
known universe--but not so amazing that we can safely ignore our
evolutionary roots in natural selection. These roots are still with us--for
evil, as in the lethal and genocidal violence by men, or for good, as in
understanding and cooperating to solve the atavistic aggression that is our
evolutionary legacy. Our fate lies in our hands.
We should not shy from this controversy, doubtful that everyone will agree
fully with this evolutionary argument, but current science makes it
vigorously clear. Male violence is largely innate and only policies based on
the biological underpinnings of human behavior can limit social violence.
