she is doing it lately. picking my brain. all day it was the questions... the
ones you dread because there are not any real answers to them.

what color is water?
how high is the sky?
is the kitty cat happy?
how did the sun get hot?
why is this called a fork?
why is a rainbow all those colors?
why do i have to call this one a penny and that one a quarter?
why shouldn't i drink water out of the bathtub if i feel like it?
how old are you, why are you that old?
how did the fish get in the ocean?

ALL DAY LONG TODAY. it sounds terrible but i was actually looking forward to
her going to bed because all she did ALL DAY LONG was ask question after
question after question. i am exhausted right now. i took her to the mall to
give her something to think about, but it only got worse.

but at least i know she's thinking about things. that's good, i guess. i am
tired though. very. my brain has been taxed.

Look at it.
Try it with food coloring.
Explain what is the color of water without the coloring.

> how high is the sky?

Explain that up is a direction from the planet.
Maybe dip a basketball in syrup and explain that the atmosphere is
somewhere about that thick.

Does it look happy?

Enroll the little brat in a physics class.

Because someone made that noise in relation to it sometime long ago.

Back to physics class after taking some math and geometric
prerequisites.

Maybe you do not spank the little brat enough.

LOL - Funny that I'd associated 'quarter' with 25 - I think it was
until I was about eight or nine that someone ask me the time and if it
was 25 after or 25 until I would say that it was a quarter after or to.

> why shouldn't i drink water out of the bathtub if i feel like it?

I dunno.

Things grow or deteriorat and nothing stays the same.
Send the brat to a nunnery.

Hi kitz :-)

Have you tried, for example, "I don't know, what color do you think water
is?" or other variations to put the question back to her?
Or for the bathtub drinking thing, "Because I said so." works quite well at
times until a child is old enough to understand.

And no, it doesn't sound terrible, it sounds normal.

Sure there are!

Clear.

The sky is made up of many layers, each at its own height.

Sure looks happy to me, sleeping there in the sunshine.

A whole bunch of hydrogen and helium came together and ignited.

Because ancient people called it that, and the name stuck.

Sunlight contains all those colors. When it passes through water droplets,
the colors separate out.

Because this one is a penny and this one is a quarter. However, they are
both coins.

Bathtub water is dirty and yucky.

> how old are you, why are you that old?

I am 34 years old. I am this old because, like you, I am passing through
time.

All life began in the ocean, and the fish just stayed there.

It sounds wonderful. A part of me really looks forward to that time. Did you
think about simply saying "I don't know"? What do you think about that?

sometimes i have to. other times i make up some circular logic. like the fork
question... why is this called a fork? well, because that's what it's called,
silly. useless information, but it's all i've got, being a bear of little
brain and all. sometimes i say something like, well, i think the cat can be
happy if you think he can. and i told her that the fish got in the ocean
because they couldn't swim in the dirt. that seemed to make sense. hehe.

parenting is 50% persperation and 50% creative thinking. i think.

Those seem like better answers actually. I would probably want to nurture
the curiosness rather than starving it to death with "I don't know". It's
just that it's such a great answer when adults asks questions...

Hi Kitz :-)

when my 2 little girls ask those sort of questions
aye answer them, at their level
but as accurately as possible, including the extent to which
the answer can be trusted

(we've covered everything from Gravity, including "dark energy"
to how to tell when a teaser likes you or is just being mean
and how to approach either situation)

they've learned to ask that sort of question only when
they really want to know

which is still a lot ;-)

buy a good encyclopedia set, or use Google
(and skepticism)
and draw on the riches of your experience
(you have a lot :-)

Apparently nobody really knows.
Seams it derives from Latin, furca, which may have
been two-pronged. It reminds me of a fork in a
road in which one is for'ced to go one way or
another. The idea of roots, e.g. 'for' or 'fur' or
'far' also bubble up in m'eye mind-sigh.

One travels, and goes for, or far.
Upon reaching a branch, one takes a fork.
One may also use a branch as a fork
to both stab/scoop or force food
onto a device for eating.

When my kids
ask these types of questions,
I usually start out answering
with a fantastic lie.

"What color is water?" might be answered
with an extemporaneous myth
about how
grass took green
sky took blue
sun took yellow
dirt took brown
grape took purple

nothing was left for water

water started crying
(water can REALLY cry),
they all felt
greedy
and agreed
to share
their colors.
that's why water
takes on the color
of the things around it.

when they ask me
if it's true,
I ask them
what they think.
when they say
"probably not",
I ask them
"Then what color

do you think
water is?"

And they might answer various things.

Then we go look it up
in books we've found
at used bookstores
and stuff.

That's how we do it
most of the time.

I've heard that if you talk down to kids

If you just talk to them in english it's a sort of

Could be that some times kids just like to push a

The responses to this post were so amazing and varied. Each gave a
little insight into the personality of the author--sometimes shocking!

To Kitz, I would offer this: the human brain is (perhaps) the most
advanced on the planet. But it has only a few little "windows" in its
development in which it can really excel. At those times it feeds on
stimulation--it is ravenous for input. You recognize this as an
endless, tiresome, string of questions--a thirst for knowledge. Even
though she is very young, now is a good time to show her how to get
information on her own from her world, from resources; and how to focus
on what she wants to know.

This is taxing, I know. The next opportunity will be easier on you, as
she will have gained some responsibility and independence. This process
of mental growth spurts will continue until she is 21 or 22. If a
window is missed, it becomes harder to recover the lost abilities
(harder but not impossible).

My last thought: never lie to her. She needs to know that she can
always have at least one person to rely on for the truth.

Aloha,

Lilinoe

PS It's ok to be tired out. It shows how much energy you are putting in
to parenting.
