2) What is alt.philosophy.kant?

alt.philosophy.kant is an unmoderated newsgroup devoted to the
works of Immanual Kant (1724-1804). From his life to his philosophy. It is
a place for discussion, not a place to post pictures, spam, or off topic.
General philosophy questions should be directed to other NG designed for
them.

3) What is the purpose of this FAQ

The FAQ is the commonly accepted view of the community. It is for
the community, from the community to serve the community of this NG. It
will contains the commonly held views on how to post by the members as
well as questions that have often been asked.

3.1) What then is a community?

A community is where members have the ability to post with matter
of self assurance and self respect. I can respect your opinion without
compromising my own. Also we do not need to labour the point until one of
us is so frustrated that we throw up our hands and try to attack the other
in that frustration. Finally, the maturity to not identify with what we
post as ourselves. We are not the sum total of debates on usenet. The lack
of ego or egotism, allows for disagreements to be handled rationally and
logically. It also allows us to give the other person's views a measure of
respect. As in often times, we will say, you have a point or you are
correct.

4) Any other hints?

-Stay on topic... try to stay on topic...

-Do not feed the Trolls

-Do not flame other people... (Wishing and hoping...)

-Try to be polite and respect one another

-Trim out the parts of a post you are responding to that are not
immediately relevant to your response. For instance, never, ever, quote
all 471 lines of a posting to add a two line response. This would be good
advice for the not-so-newbies as well. Some of the ones who seem to do
this most often are long-time regulars who should know better.

-People sometimes forget to include the names of people they are
quoting when they post. Please type the name of the person over the
quote, or use whatever quoting/attribution device your software allows.
It makes it much easier for the rest of us to follow the threads.

-Do not post test messages here. They belong in alt.test

-When quoting Kant, use the number system from the original work
so that we may find it easier, no matter what edition another person may
have.

6.1) Some terms used on APK

APK: alt.philosophy.kant
CRJ: Critique of Judgement
CPR: Critique of Pure Reason

7) Why?

Because.

8) Am I the only one who...

No. Other people do or think the same thing.

9) Does anyone else ...

No. That is sick, really, really sick. Not only does no one else,
but people who even talk about it get locked away for their own
protection. But thanks for asking...

10) What is the best way to get started with Kant?

That would depend on how serious you want to take this. The best
way would be to sit and read, then re-read and rereread the CPR until you
get it. But that is a lot of work.

11) Kant is too hard to start with, how do i really start with
Philosophy?

OK so let's start from the basics, and you try to set your own
level that you feel you can handle. No sense to toss you into the deep end
only to see you drown.

For say a very beginner level you can start with philosophy in
general with:

TZ Lavine "From Socrates to Sartre." New York: Bantam, 1984.

We then send you on to a more serious work with:

William Sahakian, "History of Philosophy" New York: Barnes and
Noble, 1968.

Finally the top of the line:

Frederick Copleston, "A history of Philosophy." New York:
Doubleday, 1962. (Look for the Volume with Kant in It, there are two sizes
and the Vol number changes.)

12) A good biography?

Ernst Cassier "Kant's Life and Thought" London: Yale University
Press, 1981.
