George Denis Patrick Carlin (May 12, 1937 – June 22, 2008)[17][18] was
an American stand-up comedian, actor and author who won four Grammy
Awards for his comedy albums.

Carlin was especially noted for his political and black humor and his
observations on language, psychology, and religion along with many
taboo subjects. Carlin and his "Seven Dirty Words" comedy routine were
central to the 1978 U.S. Supreme Court case F.C.C. v. Pacifica
Foundation, in which a narrow 5-4 decision by the justices affirmed
the government's right to regulate Carlin's act on the public
airwaves.

Seven Dirty Words

In the 2000s, Carlin's stand-up routines focused on the flaws in
modern-day America. He often took on contemporary political issues in
the United States and satirized the excesses of American culture.

He placed second on the Comedy Central cable television network list
of the 10 greatest stand-up comedians, ahead of Lenny Bruce and behind
Richard Pryor.[19] He was a frequent performer and guest host on The
Tonight Show during the three-decade Johnny Carson era, and was also
the first person to host Saturday Night Live.

i respect your respect of Carlin. until you pointed him out i'd never
personally ever heard of him. everybody is a philosopher by default. i
personally enjoy people making fun of the status quo. i'm kinda
perverse too i guess.

Thats like saying every movie has philosophy by default, which I could
agree with, but some movies cover many more general philosophical
issues than others. I think carlin was like that if you listen to all
of his stuff he covers much metaphysics, logic, ethics and religious
belief. I am not trying judge whether someone is good or bad because
they address alot of traditional philosophical issues but just noting
the difference generally, for instance this rant about abortion at the
time was both contraversial and raised some interesting philosophical
points also;

This movie below addresses amny more traditional philosophy views than
most other movies, even if all movies have some by default.

We shall both die. How's that for convergence?

Of course death is strictly from ignorance. It used to be
from principle, some kind of over arching requirement.
Today we at least have the nanotechnology of "life"
in view, and will soon manage our way out. If only we
weren't still so ignorant on that nanotechnology!

Will George Carlin get 2 weeks of national mourning? No way! He
didn't help the Bush bastards sell their fake war but he'll be
remembered far longer than Tim Russert.

Carlin really knew how to drop an "F" bomb. Ever wonder how he would
have conducted "Meet the Press?"

Carlin had great insight, he was bitter at times but with good
reason. He left when we really need him. If you want to tell people
the truth, make them laugh, it's safer that way.

There's nothing funny about losing a great comedian.

probably remain wilfully ignorant of the big Red White Blue dick
that's being jammed up their assholes every day. Because the owners of
this country know the truth, it's called the American Dream, because
you have to be asleep to believe it."

Determinists.

Seriously, I'm sad George is gone. Even though
his atheist screeds were shrill to the point of
protesting too much, he was the funniest guy
alive.

Interesting comparison, thanx. Actually I will miss them both. Russert
because sunday will never be the same without him on meet the press.
But actually I have not watched much tv in the last couple years and
there has been alot of sunday morning talk politics shows. But Carlin
doesn't have any competitors since other comedians don't go as deep it
seems. I am sure there are other ways to compare the situations,

Carlin was no philosopher in the academic sense, but he did know
how to make ideas, especially about the paradoxes involving
words and language, palatable to a mass audience. If you can do
that, you are, in my estimation, batting a cool thou.

THX for this Imm.

I didn;t know he died, never heard a word on the news outlets. Must have
missed it.

Nice post, watched that series of 7 "it's all bullshit and it's all bad for
ya!"

Fantastic!

I was introdcued to Carlin a few years back from my Son, who got into
standup for a bit. George and Bill Hicks sure were leading lights in in ur
face social opinion. Loved it! They never got much air time in australia
though.

Youtube is a winner! :-)

cheers
