We'll be getting a friend (hopefully a sister) for Pippy this afternoon,
along with a new cage. I found a tool here:

http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.shtml

that tells me I should look for dimensions of 27.5"h x 27.5"w x 17.3"d.
Does this sound reasonable for two rats?

*sigh* We ended up with a triple-decker penthouse for over 3x what the
old one cost. It looks /huge/.

We got Pippy a friend/sibling and named her Squidgy. I'm not too sure
about that name. :-)

So now Pippy and Squidgy have a home that is 30" wide, 28" tall and 15"
deep. They can climb up a walkway to a second and a third level. I've
affixed a cloth with plastic ties to the roof of the thing where they can
get at it on the third floor. Neither has negotiated getting into it yet.
I dropped a piece of popcorn into it as incentive to get in.

The sisters like each other a lot. They took to each other right away. Now
the new one just has to get more used to us - her sister has a week's head
start there.

I put in a second cardboard hut on the opposite side of the cage, and last
night someone (Pippy I'm sure) dragged it over to the same side as the
first, to make a kind of maze with the tp roll in the middle. I have more
pieces of that cardboard at my work office, so I'll give them another
piece today, and if it gets dragged over with the others, I'll give them a
fourth piece. :-)

Anyway I think they should be ok in this cage. As well as I can tell, they
look like happy rats.

I had a rat called Zeppo whose cage/nickname was
IdgyBidgySquidgyDidgyRat, or Squidgy for short :-)Zeppo would be pleased
a lady rat was using his name.

Ok, Squidgy it is. I guess.

Another issue: Squidgy walks around mouthing most of the time as if she's
chewing gum. Sometimes I swear I can hear her grinding her teeth.

She also sneezes (same as Pippy), but she also makes other sounds. I don't
know how to describe them... grunting? It looks and sounds sort of like
she's trying to barf sometimes.

Is this something to be concerned about? Or did I describe it so well that
you don't know what the heck I'm talking about? ;-)

Other than the noise-making, she seems fine to me. She eats, she drinks,
she poops, she chews, she goes up and down the cage, she seems like a
normal rat.

That's bruxing - it's good. Rats grind their teeth for a lot of reasons.
The primary purpose, I guess, is to keep their teeth at the right length,
but it can also show their emotional state. It usually means that they're
happy (like purring in a cat), though they will occasionally do it when
they're stressed, maybe to help calm themselves down. It sounds like you
have a happy rat.

This might be sinus congestion, or a chest problem. If you hold her chest
to your ear and you can hear wheezing or rattling, then it's a chest
problem. That might need veterinary treatment, but being honest (and at
the risk of upsetting other members of the group) there's often not much
vets can do for it other than giving anti-biotics (which don't always
work and can have side-effects) and decongestants. Again, you could see
if there are any irritants or cold draughts about that might be causing
the problem, and maybe try sticking her in a small cage in the bathroom
when someone's having a bath or a shower, as the steam can help their
chests. It might, like the sneezing, be a stress-related thing that will
go away.

If she's looking like she's trying to be sick - opening her mouth and
jerking and that sort of thing, it's probably that she's choked on
something and is trying to get it out, which can take quite a while. They
sort that out themelves; there's nothing much you can do about that. Or
it could be hiccups :-)

Great :-) Glad to know they're happy in their new home.

LOL I had fun entering odd sizes and seeing how many rats it could
accommodate. Had fun entering MartinsCage sizes too.
