They're selling PEOPLE? That's the only meat my rabbits would eat! ;-)

Oh get over yourself! They're not serving up people's pets.

While we are here in this group because we have rabbits as pets, most
farmers of arable crops add another letter and treat them as pests.

Those cute ickle bunnies aren't so cute when they're nibbling the
foliage of the crop you're growing, killing it off and destroying your
livelihood. Inevitably, when faced with such a situation, the solution
is simple for the farmer - kill the rabbits, a process normally
involving a shotgun or perhaps a ferret.

Assuming that this is a given, there is logically the question of what
to do with the corpses. Buried or thrown in a ditch, they will only
attract foxes (something that farmers with poultry want to avoid) and
invite disease. Therefore, the best option is to make a little money
from each one and sell them as meat. This is pretty much a breakeven
process,as there's not much money to be made after you allow for the
cost of cartridges etc.

And anyway, if you're hanging around in the meat aisle, surely you're
something of a hypocrite if you're going to draw the line at rabbits
while being perfectly happy to eat cow, pig, chicken, sheep, fish etc

Over here in the UK, we have an estimated 45m rabbits. Quite a lot for
such a small island. Rabbit damage is estimated at 100million every
year. Half of this figure is accounted for by damage to agricultural
crops. There is nothing a wild rabbit loves more than to munch its way
through winter wheat, barley and oats. For every rabbit grazing on one
hectare of winter wheat, the farmer loses one per cent of its annual
yield.

They also chew through the bark of trees, sometimes killing nursery
stock or young saplings, and preventing the natural regeneration of
woodland.

There is even a legal responsibility to keep your land free of
rabbits. The whole of England and Wales (save for the City of London,
the Isles of Scilly and Skokholm Island, off the coast of
Pembrokeshire) was designated a Rabbit Clearance Area under the 1954
Pests Act, which effectively means that every landowner is responsible
for killing or removing rabbits from his land. However, an amendment
to the way the act is enforced, made at the end of last year, means
that not all complaints about the way a landowner controls his rabbit
population will be enforced.

I would never harm my rabbits, but I am open minded enough to
understand that not everyone thinks that way.

The only reason the rabbits are eating crops is because you're not giving
them what they demand: Television viewing rights. In the UK, it's even
worse as there's a tax on every TV tuner.

Not strictly true. There's a licence required for each household. Your
house-bunny is covered by your own licence and so far as I know the
fee doesn't apply to hutches ;-)

Oh Boy! Now we have to actually live in hutches no just hutch sized houses.

Oh, you're from the UK - you're the guys that shipped wild rabbits over
here! *fist shake* :P We have the same problem with the wild ones in NZ
and the only reason we have RCD is because farmers brought it here
illegally to deal with them.

For anyone who wants to take action to get Kroger to stop selling rabbit meat, I have created an online petition on change.org. Here is the link. Thanks for supporting the cause! :)
