I am in Indiana.

I sold the ferrets today to a local pet store, cage and all, they are in a
better place.

I hope some bozo doesn't buy them on a whim for a little kid, then neglect
them. Every time I go to the local Petco to buy food, I stop by their
ferret cage and talk to the fuzzies. I always wonder how many of them are
destined to fall into the wrong hands. - CW

I feel the same way. I just dread the fact that they just give these an
animals to any Tom, Dick or Harry who feels that they need to have one or
THREE. If a pet store is a better place for your ferrets than I hope you
never get the chance to own another one again!

Maybe a bit harsh?
I have three ferrets. Well my daughter has. I just feed them, water them,
clean them, talk to them and when they're very lucky take them for long
walks to the pub. Well long for their little legs. (takes b....y ages as
well! Can't they smell beer? No sense of direction or thirst.)
But then I've got spare time.

When they are lucky?

Let me tell you something, my 2 ferrets are family for life. They have
adjusted well (surprisingly) to my longer work schedule lately....meaning
they have to stay in cage while I'm gone. But as soon as I get home, I let
them out and they stay out until bedtime or later. On weekends, I'll often
let them stay out (in my room) all night.

Trouble with pet stores is that they don't screen buyers like many shelters
do. They just want to make a sale...and it's a good one with 1-2 ferrets,
plus cage and accessories and food.

Look at the baby ferrets in the pet store. Oh, so cute! Let's buy some!
Trouble is most buyers know nothing about them and way too often are ready
to get rid of them after a few weeks/months...too much work.

As we all know, ferrets are not like cats that do their own thing, they love
interaction with us too. Let them out every chance you get, play with them,
hug them, kiss them...they will become your best friends, not just pets.

A bit harsh? Sorry I'm not trying to start a argument here. Animals that you
take on the responsibility for and then just kick back to a pet store is
pretty crude and irresponsible. Some people treat everything like they can
just throw it away when it becomes an inconvenience for them. If this guy
cared one bit he would have screened people who were interested and made
damn sure that these helpless animals that HE took on the responsibility for
would all be sold to a loving home together. I have had ferrets in my life
for the last 15 years and I have had every single one of them till the end.
I've taken the good with the bad, lost a few to health reasons but I never
gave up on any of them. I took the responsibility and made a promise to be
absolutely sure that I could give them everything they need BEFORE I brought
my first baby ferret home. Owning a pet is so much more than slapping down a
few hundred bucks and taking them home. It actually takes time and money to
maintain happy, healthy pets. The only thing I think is harsh and unfair is
the way some people get off thinking it's o.k. to just take the easy road
out when they make uneducated decisions to bring home a pets they know
nothing about. The only bad thing is it's the animals that end up suffering.
But look at the bright side he probably got some of his money back by
pawning his ferrets off at the pet store and he didn't even have to go
through the hassle of screening people to find them a good home. Guess it
worked out great for everyone!

bottom line is that " big daddy "
is an asshole and he could have cared less
what happens to them . i'm surprised he
just dump them off somewhere .
i knew when i saw his post trying to
sell them , he was a LOSER !
they might at least have a chance at
the pet shop and are definitely better
off than than where they were .

Well yes. It's a treat. They can't get bladdered every night! Only beer
though, they get to punchy on Scotch.

LOL! :-D

I see you are from the UK. Correct? I've got a friend from the UK and he's
told us about a popular British pub game....put a ferret in your trowsers
and see how long you can stand having it in there or before it bites you in
an unfortunate place.

That's funny but obviously not for the ferrets. I did a Snopes.com search to
verify this practice but no mention of it there. I also did a Google search
for 'pub ferret.' Lot's of names and mention of "ferret in trowsers" but no
actual page that describes this or verifies it.

Maybe it's a myth? Or maybe it's been stopped now. Regardless, I would
consider it ferret abuse.

I'm from the U.S. and the only ferret that ever tried to get up a pant leg
of mine wanted to be there. Other that I have no idea what you are talking
about. Sounds like you may just be trying to argue with someone just for the
sake of arguing.

Not at all. This is what I was told from a friend that grew up in the UK.
And as I said.... do a Google search for "pub ferret" and you will get many
hits that refer to the subject. Many pubs are named after the practice.

As far as my own ferrets...If I did such a thing, the older one would
probably be happy and fall asleep in my pantleg. The young one would
probably struggle to get out until I gave up and let her out. No danger of
either biting me though.

It could be a myth but I think it is real...or at least it was real in the
past.

OK, as an English-woman I'll tell you where I *think* this stems from: when
people used to go rabbiting they had to do it on the owners land. If they
didn't have permission (ie poaching) they needed to be able to make a quick
getaway and conceal the evidence if caught. Now I can just imagine a
ferret, even a well trained one, would be so curious that it would pop out
of a pocket at an inopportune moment, whereas concealed in well tied
trousers might keep them under control for long enough to make an escape.

I'm sure people did do it but like someone else said the only ferret up my
trousers wants to be there.
This is where the ferret and I disagree.
They maybe mainly carnivors but still not going to risk my nuts!
