My almost 1 year old lab has dry skin, this is my first lab but i've heard
its common. We are going to the vet soon for a checkup and I'll ask them
then what they suggest I do, but in the meantime I was wondering if there
were any supplements or special shampoos you all recommend? I dont think
his skin is due to the weather because its a constant low 80's here. He does
tend to shed alot, like I need to vacuum everyday and yet there are still
tons of yellow 'tumbleweeds' throughout my house. I feed him eukenuba puppy
formula and use Hartz puppy shampoo on him every other month (or longer) but
when you go to pat him your hands get the dry skin on them, yet he hasnt had
any hot spots. I 've heard of trying vitamin E, fish oil caps, or oatmeal
shampoos.

Going to the vet is a good idea. IMO Bathing him every other month is way
too much, so that might be the problem. Labs, being water dogs, have a
special kind of coat and skin designed for the water. Soap removes the
natural oils in the skin and tries it out. Try brushing him a couple of
times a week, which will not only remove hair, but clean it as well. And he
will love it. Ask you vet about the appropriate kind of brush. Your Lab
only requires a bath about twice a year, unless he gets into something very
smelly. If he's muddy or dusty just let him go for a swim or wash him with
the garden hose. Get one of those cheap kiddy pools and keep it full on
during the hot times of the year. True, he will have a bit of an odour when
wet, but he will dry out and smell fine again. Besides the smell of wet Lab
reminds me of the fall. Good luck

I would start with the easiest thing first. That's to stop shampooing and
especially with Hartz products. (I am not a fan of Hartz)
Start adding fish oil capsules to his food. Work up to 2 a day. Or you
might try Nupro which is a supplement.

Its not that I want to bathe him that much but he gets dirty and smells like
pee to the point where its making my house smell and no one wants to pet
him. I dont leave him alone for more than 5 minutes when he goes out but
somehow he still manages to smell like it. He has a kiddie pool but refuses
to use it no matter how much coaxing. My husband brushes him twice a week.
Will just hosing him down really help with the smell?
