What would cause an 11-week-old lab, with a flea collar to be scratching and
biting herself? We have had her for a few weeks and have recently noticed
that she seems to be doing it quite more frequently and there seems to be
some flaking while I brush her. I am using a very expensive moisturizing
shampoo that has been recommended to me by a pet store manager.

Please post to this group or email me at jmcf...@commerce.state.wi.us

Thank you

I'm not a big fan of putting a flea collar on such a young puppy...unless
you have fleas in your area/yard/home(ie. you have indoor/outdoor cat), she
shouldn't need one. Perhaps she is having a reaction to it.

I've got an 11 week old black lab as well, no fleas, but he also chews
on himself some, some of it I think is just itches, also he's growing
his long coat right now so that's another possiblity, and finally could
be some of these "growing pains" I think the proper term is panostietis
(sp?).

As for the dry flakey skin, watch how much you bathe him, labs and all
dogs need their natural oils to keep water and such out, I read some
where that the best thing for a rutine washing a lab is just plain old
water. I can understand shampoo if he's been rolling around in
something that he shouldn't have been but other wise don't bathe him
too often.

How often are you bathing your dog? Even a moisturizing shampoo will strip
the natural oils in a lab's skin, and may cause irritation. My lab gets wet
quite a bit, but I only give him a true bath with shampoo every 3 months.
Maybe your puppy's skin just needs a break from soap.

I have a 2.5 yr. old B. Lab named Rudy. Labs tend to be prone to skin
problems. I know I have this problem with Rudy...

I've used a few products and the one that seems to work best, for me and
Rudy anyway, is 'Petrelief Rinse' made by a co. called St. Jon's,
www....@stjon.com .

Another, at least I think so, advantage to this product is that it is pretty
much all natural.

I hope this is helpfull!

Our 2.5 year-old has allergies to flea bites, and will scratch until the fur
is thinned out. If your pup's getting washed too often (mine gets washed
when he's gotten into something disgusting - otherwise never) it'll dry him
out. Check for flea bites/eggs. The vet prescribed steroids for ours to
relieve the itch.
