As everyone here is likely to be a degu lover/owner, I would like to
tell you about a scheme I have created to improve the poor quality of
degu's genetics. We all know what problems degus suffer from- diabetes
being the most common. This is largely due to the poor genetic
background of the pet degu, with the vast majority of our pets in the
UK and northern America being bred from only 10 originals imported
from Chile in the 1950's.
I am the creator of Degutopia- a website dedicated to the provision of
accurate, fully referenced scientific information about degus and how
to care for them correctly. In keeping with this, I have created a
degu registration scheme which is basically a database with details of
every registered degu- a bit like a degu pedigree. The information is
kept only by me but can be requested by anyone intending to breed
degus to hopefully reduce the degree of inbreeding and relative
crossing.
If you would like to actively contribute to improving degu's genetics,
just register your degus using the simple form on Degutopia's website.
It only takes a couple of minutes, is completely free and you will
recieve an electronic certificate of registration for each of your
registered degus stating their unique registration number. Your degus
don't have to be involved in a breeding programme to be registered,
but they must be alive at the time of registration!
To register your degus or find out more, simply visit Degutopia-
www.degutopia.co.uk
You can find the registration form by clicking the link at the bottom
of the main page, or find it under the 'Degutopia' menu on the left.
Alternatively, you can e-mail me for more information at
degu...@btinternet.com
Thanks for listening- With your help we can help our degus to help
themselves!
