STATUS REPORT on electronic matching service.

1) I have a fairly good questionnaire. I am looking for and accepting
more comments. But I am pretty happy with the current product.
2) I have enough people to launch a service. So far 237 people have
responded despite the fact that I don't have a working product yet.
3) I have found a site and am in the process of setting up a program on
it.
4) The only CRITICAL thing left is the programming for the listserver
program. I have found a couple programmers but will probably need more
as people have time conflicts during the summer and I want to get
this service off the ground as quickly as possible. Please contact
me ASAP if you would like to help in the programming. This will be
for an UNIX system. We are also looking for DOS programmers for
making a dialog box program for IBM compatibles that makes it easier
to fill out a questionnaire.

Following is the latest draft of the questionnaire. I am still
taking comments on it. I am sure that a few critical questions are
still missing. For example, my last draft forgot to ask people
whether they worked on a day shift or a night shift. Whoops!

Here's the draft:

DRAFT 4.4

Traditional methods of courting and flirting are demeaning generally to
both men and women. Not only are they demeaning but they are ineffective.
I know many, many people who have had serious problems using the
traditional dating methods. I believe that if my service takes off it
will greatly improve many people's lives. I hope that my service will
result in fewer divorces due to poor matches and fewer single parent homes
because it will be easier for people to find mates.

This document contains an introduction to the service, how to fill in the
questionnaire, technical details on how the service works, and the actual
questionnaire.

I am charging the following amounts for my service -- 1) For accepting
questionnaires: $0.00 2) For arranging bad dates: $0.00 3) For arranging
fantastic dates: $0.00. Of course, I'll accept donations for a great
date. I have looked into the history of dating services and they always
fail for the same reason: Not enough people. I believe that the best way
to get a lot of applicants is to offer a free service. For example, a
service based in Las Vegas offers detailed questionnaires as good as I
hope my final draft will be. The problem is that they charge $9995 for a
world-wide search. This simply can't attract as many people as my charge
of $0.00 for a world-wide search.

Welcome to Electronic Matchmaker (tm), a matchmaker based in cyberspace.
In William Gibson's classic book, cyberspace was a form of virtual reality
for interacting with databases and individuals across the world. With the
millions of people connected to Usenet whether through Bitnet, CompuServe,
or others, cyberspace is starting to be built today. While it may consist
of mostly just text and be two dimensional, it is a primitive form of
cyberspace and it is available today. Without this cyberspace, I couldn't
possibly think about offering my service for free. On cyberspace, your cost
of advertising is zero and more importantly you can have an AI (program)
handle most of the work, reducing overhead to nearly zero.

At this point I am planning to mail questionnaires as they are
requested, then process the questionnaires through an AI and finally
send e-mail to people after I have found a potential match for them. I
am working on creating a listserver that can 1) send questionnaires to
people who request them 2) process the questionnaires and send error
messages if they are filled out incorrectly and 3) give people e-mail
addresses of potential matches until they ask the listserver to stop. I
would welcome any help in setting up this questionnaire and developing
the matching algorithm.

I plan to post weekly messages like the following to alt.personals:

Number of new entries this week: men women
Total number of entries of men, women, and number per country.
Number of matches sent out this week
Number of people requesting removal from database:
Reason: dating, dissatisfied, loss of e-mail access, unknown

In each of the following rating categories:
1) Indicate if this category is important to you by replacing the
dash with a (S)how stopper, (Y)es, (N)o or (M)aybe. You will not
be matched with anyone who doesn't match in categories that you
have checked (S)how stopper.
2) Specify your own attributes by replacing the dash in the appropriate
selection in the SELF column with an X. Use multiple Xs for SELF
where appropriate.
3) Specify whether you wish this attribute in your DESIRED MATCH
by placing a (Y)es, (N)o or (M)aybe in place of the dash for
each appropriate attribute. Leaving the dash in the DESIRED MATCH
column means (M)aybe. If you wish greater degree of accuracy in
the DESIRED MATCH column use the digits 9-0 instead of Y/N/M where

This is a person who cares a lot if his match exercises. He rarely
exercises and is looking for a match like him. He has decided that "No"
he doesn't want a match who either exercises several times a week or
daily. He is "Maybe" interested in a match who exercises once a week.
And he is "Yes" interested in a mate that exercises rarely or once a
month. Because he has selected the (S)how stopper choice for care about
category, he will absolutely not be matched with anyone who exercises
several times a week or daily.

(Skip to the section entitled COMMENTS if you hate technical stuff.)

EXAMPLES OF PRECISION METHOD

Occasionally you may find a question that you would like to answer more
precisely. For those questions, you may answer 0-9 with a 0 being the
strongest "No" and 9 being the strongest "Yes". The "Y", "M", "N" method
converts to a 9, 5, and 0 on this scale. Note that you must still use the
letter "S" on this scale to indicate show stoppers.

If you use this method for all your questions, you will probably get a
severe headache from trying to decide whether you should put a 4 or a 5 in
various DESIRED MATCH columns. Electronic Matchmaker(tm) will not
reimburse you for your aspirin costs and does not recommend that you use
this method much, if at all. The extensive list of questions and choices
in this questionnaire will more than make up for the lack of precison of
not using a 4 or a 6 instead of a "M".

exercises and is looking for a match like her. She has decided that "No"

gave him a 1 instead. She is "Maybe" interested in a match who exercises
once a week. And she is "Yes" interested in a mate who exercises rarely

for the amount that she cares about this category.

ALGORITHM

The matching algorithm first looks at rate of agreement on questions that
have been rated "S" for Care About Category, next "Y" for Care About
Category, finally it looks for rate of agreement on questions that have
been rated "M" for Care About Category. Questions that have been rated
"N" for Care About Category are not compared. Normally, a "N" answer in
the DESIRED MATCH column will not absolutely stop a match from happening.
But if a "S" for show stopper has been selected for the Care About
Category and a "N" has been selected in the DESIRED MATCH column, the
match will be absolutely stopped.

MULTIPLE PURPOSE

If you want several types of contacts such as 1) somebody to meet close,
2) a pen pal far away, and 3) someone to visit for a holiday not too far
from home just check multiple SELF Xs. No need to submit multiple
applications.

CHANGED MIND

If you change your mind about how you wish to answer a question, you
can resubmit a new questionnaire.

SEXUAL COMPATIBILITY

These questions have been moved to the end of the questionnaire so
people who don't want to answer them don't have to read them either.

COMMENTS

Don't include comments scattered throughout the form. If you want to
include comments, write them at the end of this questionnaire in the
section entitled, COMMENTS THAT YOU WANT YOUR MATCH TO SEE.

PRIVACY

All initial contacts between matches will be done by e-mail. If you want
your contact to be totally anonymous, send e-mail to pi...@cupid.sai.com.
You will be given an e-mail address like ap....@cupid.sai.com. Enter
this e-mail address in the general information section at the end of this
application. You may even hide your e-mail address from Electronic
Matchmaker(tm) by sending e-mail to ap....@cupid.sai.com instead of
eric_s...@cup.portal.com.

Also note that all answers are confidential. Not only will they not be
distributed to any persons or companies but they will not be sent to your
match. I feel that people will answer more honestly if they know that
their matches will not be reading all of their answers! Note that the
optional comments that you may enter at the end of the questionnaire will
be sent to your match, unlike your answers.

Please remember that the three choices in the RATING column are for
what you want in a match; these choices have nothing to do with your
SELF column. The three choices effect your DESIRED MATCH column.

STATUS REPORT on electronic matching service.

1) I have a fairly good questionnaire. I am looking for and accepting
more comments. But I am pretty happy with the current product.
2) I have enough people to launch a service. So far 318 people have
responded despite the fact that I don't have a working product yet.
3) I have found a site and am in the process of setting up a program on
it.
4) The only CRITICAL thing left is the programming for the listserver
program. I have found a couple programmers but will probably need more
as people have time conflicts during the summer and I want to get
this service off the ground as quickly as possible. Please contact
me ASAP if you would like to help in the programming. This will be
for an UNIX system. We are also looking for DOS programmers for
making a dialog box program for IBM compatibles that makes it easier
to fill out a questionnaire.
