I thought that, since we are now in a new year with "new beginnings,"
and because we have so many new posters... maybe even some new "lurkers"
since Christmas, when, I suspect, some people got computers as Christmas
gifts (I am going to get one within the next couple of months "from me
to me with love and devotion") maybe it would be nice... and correct if
those of us who have been in the NG for a while reintroduce ourselves to
those who may not know who we are...
Let's see if I can get this right... :-)
I am Peter Hammel (some of you know me as PeterH)
I live in Deerfield, Illinois, USA, about 20 miles north of Chicago
I have been married to Barbara for almost 34 years
My second best friend in the whole world is Buttons, a beagle-terrier
mix, (we call it beagle-TERROR) who is the only "person" that I let push
me around!
We have two children, Rick (32), who is married to Elizabeth (they have
a daughter Jacqlyn (2) of whom I am very proud) and they live in Las
Vegas, Nevada. (Watch out, MJ, We will invade soon!!!) Rick and
Elizabeth are both special education teachers. our second son, Jon, (28)
is, to be politically correct, mentally challenged (my, how I hate that
phrase), and lives in a group home with 19 other mildly mentally
retarded people (I like that phrase much better).
Barbara is a homemaker most of the time, but spends a couple of days a
week in a greeting card shop... and I spend much too much time trying to
run a quickprinting shop... a very small one, where only one other
person works besides me...
My interests include computers (obviously, but Macintoshes in
particular) camping (well, not really "camping," as we have a fifth
wheel trailer sitting in a campground about 100 miles from our home
which we use as a summer cottage on nice weekends in the summertime. We
hope to retire to it in the future, living winters in it and summers in
our home).
Well, now you know almost all about me... How about you? Whose gunna be
next?
Happy new year to you and yours...
Peter

Ok Peter, I'll bite!:)
My name is Pauline Sheppard, most of you know me as PASH. I live in
Brisbane, Australia, but am originally from England. I am 47,
divorced, have two daughters Mirella 18, and Katrina 14. We have 3
dogs, 3 cats, 1 guinea pig and 6 assorted birds to keep us busy.
I am currently setting up an internet shopping mall business on the
internet with a friend, but it's very much in its embryo stages right
now. I'm also doing a part-time Counselling Course, which is proving
to be fun, but hitting a bit too close to home sometimes:)
I hope eventually to be able to set up my own counselling business but
until then have decided to try to sell my combined talents of web page
designing, typing, logging people onto the internet, advertising
people's businesses on the web, giving basic computer and internet
lessons, and hopefully (if I can buy a scanner), be able to do some of
that as well.
Well, that's more or less 'me' in a nut shell for good or bad!:)
Onto the next person:)))

Hey, Neat Idea! I enjoyed Peter's and Pauline's. :-) Okay, so
here goes....
I'm David, husband of Dalin, married 37+ years, one son (Bob, 33). We
live in Central New York where the snow fall is highest in U.S ---
because that's where Dalin wants to be -- and with her is where I want
to be... <vbg> She's my best friend. My second best friend is a
3-ton GMC 4x4 that makes life in Central New York a bit friendlier...
I am a computer project manager for Medicare -- and tend to wear jeans
7 days a week -- at the office and at home. Two sweatshirts and a
pair of jeans is a complete wardrobe for me. I like to write and much
of my stuff has been published, but not in any book or magazine you
would want to read <g>.
One of my hobbies is serving as an unofficial and unappointed
secretary of APFPY information and IRC Q&A for newbies. Some people
like that service; some don't. :-) I also e-mail to/from a few of the
NG regulars. Like Peter, I too am hoping to replace Dalin's and my PC
this year -- to let Dalin have sound on her PC and for me to load
UNIX. Another hobby is monitoring IRC - I use mIRC mostly, but also
several other clients and like to try new servers once or twice a
week. I also like reading historic fiction, collecting model cars,
and avoiding any type of yard work, whatever. I also like avoiding
wallpapering and painting rooms, but Dalin manages to get me to do
those tasks anyway. Nuff said.
David
Okay... Next in line?

Great Idea! Now that I think of it, I don't remember if I ever posted a
bio or not? If not, oh well here goes;
Joyce Bugg is my real honest to goodness name. Yes I've heard all the
joke about it.<G> I'm going to be 57 in May. I'm a widow with one
son (32) who just married a lovely lady by the name of Michelle.
I live in Eastlake, Ohio. Work in Cleveland as an office manager in a
social service agency.
I have been told that I need a hip replaced. I hope to postpone the
surgery until I retire in two years.
I luv my PC! <VBG>
I give children and their parents introductory PC lessons on a part time
basis. I can see it becoming my full time occupation once I retire.
I serve as treasurer for the MultiCultural Coalition . The Coalition's
goal is to erase discrimination towards various groups of people due to
color, ethnic origin, religion, gender, or sexual persuasion. Yes, I
know it's a big task. But, you have to start somewhere.
Hobbies? Hmmm..lets see.... Reading mysteries, sewing, learning about
graphics and the most important hobby of all .... meeting and getting to
know new people.

Hi, my name is Terri (Teresa on my birth certificate) Smeigh. I am 41 yrs old
and live in southern New Jersey. I have been married to Andy for 21 years and
we have 3 children. Kathryn is 19 (20 on Jan 28), Karen is 18 and pregnant with
her first child (my first grandchild) and William is 10. I am currently not
working since the company I worked for decided to relocate to another state. I
have no idea what I will end up doing. My hobbies include the computer, APFPY,
reading especially horror and mystery, counted cross-stitching, starting
exercise programs (but maybe this time I will actually manage to stay with it
since I got a membership to a local health and fitness club) and writing
(nothing published though). We have an 80 pound black labrador retriever, and 2
cats (1 black one and 1 white one). My son has several chameleons. That's all
folks.

Hi ...!!!! I'm John Riley
I live in Dewsbury, West Riding of Yorkshire, Centre of the universe.
I am 44 years old, a Piscean born on the13/March/1953
I have been married for just over 25 years (you don't get that for
murder) to Teresa my lovely wife who is 43 years young, I was 19 and
Teresa 18 when we married (they said it wouldnt last, marrying young).
We have two daughters, Emma aged 24 now married to Matthew who does
not support the same football team as me (Leeds United) but I still
accepted him into the family,, nice of me heh...!!
And Helen aged 22 who still lives at home, she is married to our
telephone, but disappears when the phone bill arrives.
I work as a supervisor for a hardwood door importer, but would love to
know more about computers and maybe take it up as a career.
Teresa is a full time further education student, full time mother and
homemaker and works part time in the local hospital as an auxillary
nurse, she is also a hairdresser by trade and still finds time to do
all the family's hair.
We both enjoy holidaying abroad, our most recent one was a cruise and
stay, we spent a week in the Dominican republic and a week cruising
round the Caribbean on the M.S. Seaward, visiting different islands
this was for our Silver wedding anniversary. I would love to visit
Malaya and maybe with some serious saving up will manage to do so.
I would also love to visit a penpal I have in Rochester NY who I have
been communicating with for over a year now.
I first wrote in this ng about eighteen months ago as Joh...@aol.com,
but that was working out quite costly and finding time was also hard,
I have now more time and unlimited access so I came back to this
vibrant ng. I am not a avid poster but I do read every post.

Nifty idea, Peter. I've been in and out for over a year. I've gone by Linda and
Lin, but finally got it to Lindy, since there are alot of Linda's aboard.
I first posted to the group in October of '96 asking for penpals. One of the
responders was another casual reader. Lucky for us, he decided to answer. The
rest is history. We've been married since last August and are very happy in our
home in Northern Florida. We are both in our mid 40's and enjoy life more today
then we ever have before. This is the first marriage for each of us, so we are
enjoying a totally new way of life.
We both spend hours at our computers, but he is into gardeneing while I like
painting ceramics, needlepoint and photography. I still try to watch the
newsgroup as much as possible, but there is so much to do that I'm not as
regular as I'd like.
Our only children are 2 Springer Spaniels named Sarah and Maggie.
That's about it for us.
Hope y'all have a wonderful New Year. Be seeing you in the ng.
Lindy

Great idea Peter.
So, .....hello to anyone I haven't met before.
I'm Angela, 39yrs, (oops, don't tell them! <G>) Very happily divorced,
as compared to unhappily married you understand!, with one wonderful son
Neil almost 15yrs, who lives with my ex because his job fits in better
with childcare stuff. (......A true 90's man I have to say to his
credit). Neil visits most weekends, and we have a good time making up
for the weekdays apart. I work as a director in the NHS, but started
out as a chartered physiotherapist more years ago than I like to
remember! I live in Durham UK, and drive a Nissan Terrano, the choice
of which was (I think) the only sign of any sort of mid-life crisis a
couple of years ago <BG>. I adore cats, and miss mine like crazy,
because he too had to stay with my ex, (...he was too old to leave all
day alone), so I have now settled for tropical fish and, a tank of stick
insects, the latter of which were entirely my son's idea! My job is at
risk from next April, so I'm busily searching for a new one, which
inevitably may mean yet another change of house. (I've had three in the
last four years). Fortunately, I enjoy moving to pastures new and manage
to avoid worrying about the future.
That's about it really.
Angela.
Next.................
Tropicals...which type.....platies..neons..wagtails. angels..black
Mollies..guppies....
Live bearers?? Community tank???
Rams I like Rams...
I used to keep community tanks..and breed the fish.... then I went on to
Marine...I love Marine..but so expensive...even the rock is so expensive
Di
I'm John Spacer. I live in Anchorage, Alaska, USA where at this particular
moment it's twenty below zero fahrenheit and due to get colder before
morning. I work for the US government, doing survey data and database
manipulation, platting, and all the computer nerdisms necessary to
accomplish those things. I'm retired from the US Air Force. I was a
full-time jazz musician for them, writing arrangements and playing low
brass (mostly trombones of various descriptions.) I'm a recovering
alcoholic, a member of AA, and have not found it necessary to have a drink
of alcohol for ten-and-a-half years. I like fishing, especially on the
briny deep. No surprise about that, since that's why many people come
here.
I have an Associate of Science degree in music from the Community College
of the Air Force and a Bachelor of Science degree in Lotsaclasses from the
University of Matchbook (Wayland Baptist University.) Mostly it's music
and administration.
I still like jazz and classical music, I like anything to do with
computers, freshly ground coffee and Thai food (the hotter the better.)
I've taught school as a substitute and have tutored speakers of English as
a second language (ESOL) using the Laubach method. I'm a social liberal and
a fiscal conservative, but am for the most part apolitical. I absolutely
cannot abide bullies, boors, bigots, or born-again zealots. I will NOT
argue nor discuss either religion or politics in any of my correspondence.
I'm generally pretty laid back, but I do have my moments. I am also a
world-class flamer when pressed.
I have a twenty-four year old son who plays guitar and is currently
recording a music CD. He lives on his own in New Mexico. I have a site
which you all may know about, but which I'll list at the end of this,
whenever I finish. I live with (and love) the most interesting woman I
have ever met. Her name is Supavadee and she came from Thailand. She's a
Thai Buddhist with a disposition like a pop bottle rocket. She surrounds
me with abuse, love, light, laughter and a constant flow of similar
dichotomies.... Enough. I guess I'm through. If you want to know more,
write me. Be nice.
Regards, John (*j*p*s*p*a*c*e*r@a*la*ska.n*et)
(Remove asterisks from address)
My opinions are my own, and I damn well take credit for them, unless they
are unpopular and cost me money, in which case I'll blame them on someone
else....

Lindy, glad to see your post and hope you find more time for the NG.
That goes for Jim, too. You both have something to add to the mix. Tell
Jim we have a receipe page now. :-)
I was writing Jim and Lindy both but not aware of it at first. Jim
because he was living in the same city I lived as a child and Lindy just
because I like her. After a bit it became obvious we were all three
corresponding so I got to take part in the 'could it really be possible
to meet someone this way' stage of their relationship. I felt like I had
something to do with it which isn't true at all. But I am always a
pushover for a love story so act like I did.

MJ
Actually, MJ, you did. I got really nervous just before heading to Florida to
meet Jim and you helped to convince me that my judgement of him was absolutely
correct. So if I haven't said it before, then I thank you now for helping me
see a great person and go after him.
Lindy
At the moment I have one of those hexagonal pedestal tanks, so the room
in it limits the range of fish I have. Over the years, I've kept and
bred all sorts of cold water and tropicals, but my current tank only has
angels, black widows, zebras, cardinals and rosy barbs. The zebra keeps
laying eggs though, which the other fish can't wait to gobble up!
I've never been able to face the expense of marine tanks, even the fish
are incredibly expensive. I mean, when a couple of angels die that's
one thing, ....but most of the marine's I've seen cost in excees of
thirty pounds! Do you have shrimps and anenomes as well? Marine tanks
look so exciting and colourful I always think.
Angela.
I havent got a tank at the mo..but I had anemones, sea cucumbers, crabs,
clown fish..severa different types..., shrimps, different types of
living rock..my last tank thermostat overheated and killed the lot...so
I just dismantled it....
Now there is only one fish left in the tank,a large Marginet damselfish.I
believe that I read somewhere that the average lifespan for a damselfish was
around 3 years.I bought this fish back in 1991and it's still going strong. It
has outlived other damselfish and others that I had by several years. Is it the
worlds oldest damselfish,I wonder?
Roly.
There was a programme on the radio last week where a lady who phoned in
was claiming to have a 27yr old goldfish! BTW, what does a damselfish
look like exactly Roly?
Angela.
Roly.
