The goal of the Sophia Project is to advance the scholarly study of
astrology and cultural astronomy in British institutions of higher
education. We seek to make it possible to study any aspect, past or
present, of the heavens' human significance – whether social,
intellectual, cultural, religious or psychological – and to do so in
accordance with the best academic standards. Funds for this purpose
are administered by the Sophia Trust, which is advised by a steering
committee comprised of trustees and elected representatives from the
astrological community.

At present the Sophia Project is funding four principal initiatives:

Bath Spa University College
www.bathspa.ac.uk/sophia
In October 2002 the Sophia Project funded a unique MA in the critical
study of Cultural Astronomy and Astrology. This degree is the only one
of its kind in the world and Bath, the home of William Herschel, the
discoverer of Uranus, provides a fitting home for it. The Centre for
the Study of Cultural Astronomy and Astrology is an academic body
within the School of Historical and Cultural Studies at Bath Spa
University College. It is housed in former eighteenth-century farm
buildings known as The Sophia Centre. The Centre has two academic
goals; 'to undertake the academic and critical examination of
astrology and its practice' and 'to pursue research, scholarship and
teaching in the relationship between astrological, astronomical and
cosmological beliefs and theories, and society, politics, religion and
the arts, past and present'. The Centre offers an MA in Cultural
Astronomy and Astrology. The modules include An Introduction to
Cultural and Astronomy and Astrology, Research methods, Stellar
religion, Psychological perspectives on modern astrology, Science and
scepticism and History of astrology. Students may also take one of two
modules in Study of Religions department: Sacred Geography and New
Age. Students may also study for the qualifications of Postgraduate
Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate. Associate Students may take one
module. We welcome applications from students who wish to study for
the degrees of Master or Doctor of Philosophy (MPhil or PhD): these
degrees are achieved by private research. We also welcome overseas
students: assistance can be given in finding accommodation in Bath and
students from the USA may be entitled to apply for Federal loans.

The staff of the Centre are Dr. Michael York (Head of Centre), Dr.
Patrick Curry and Nicholas Campion MA. Specialist guest lecturers
include Dr. Liz Greene, Babs Kirby, Mike Harding, Komilla Sutton,
Robin Heath and Pat Harris.

The University of Southampton: The Research Group for the Critical
Study of Astrology is an independent group currently convened by Sue
High of the Statistics Division of the School of Social Sciences. Its
role is to monitor standards of research into astrology and promote
the use of sound scientific methods in empirical studies. The group
is working with Social Science post graduate students with relevant
research concerns, and has begun a comprehensive online data-base,
complete with brief abstracts, on research into astrology. For
further information contact Sue High Website

The University of Kent at Canterbury: Cosmology and Divination at the
University of Kent: The Sophia Trust is currently sponsoring five new
courses under the aegis of Cosmology and Divination as part of the MA
in Mysticism and Religious Experience at the University of Kent, and
one course as part of the BA in Religious Studies. This academic year
the MA courses will be: The Imaginal Cosmos, The Medieval Christian
Cosmos, The Hermeneutics of Divination, Ficino and Renaissance
Astrology, and Reading Ficino's 'Book of Life'. There will also be a
supplementary course in symbolic interpretation, Astrology for
Mystics. The aim of the Cosmology and Divination courses is to
examine the relationship between human beings and the cosmos they
inhabit, focusing on the modes of knowledge implicit in divinatory
practices. Interpretations of the cosmos characteristically manifest
through the forms of divination, thus divination presents both an
expression and interpretation of the cosmos. In European traditions,
the principal vehicle for cosmological interpretation has historically
been astrology, and the study of hermeneutical approaches to this
subject will become the basis for the exploration of the epistemology
of divination. The courses will consider both historical and modern
theories of interpretation through various study methods: the reading
of primary texts, comparative studies and analytical studies of
divinatory practices in the context of historical and cultural
cosmologies. Divinatory and astrological practices and beliefs will
be reviewed in the light of traditional metaphysics, religious,
magical, artistic and imaginative forms, contemporary psychological
theories and sceptical critiques. Occasional students are welcome to
attend Cosmology and Divination courses or any other course offered by
the MA in Mysticism. Enquiries should be made to the programme
convenor, Dr Angela Voss at a.v...@kent.ac.uk or Dr. Leon Schlamm at
l.p.s...@kent.ac.uk Further information is available at:

University of Leicester: Archaeoastronomy/cultural astronomy at the
University of Leicester: the Sophia Trust is currently sponsoring the
development of two Masters-level courses, "World Archaeoastronomy" and
"Astronomy: Theory, Methods and Practice". These are being designed by
Professor Clive Ruggles and will form the main core modules within a
new MA course in archaeoastronomy/cultural astronomy that it is hoped
to run from 2006 or 2007. The aim is to produce critical thinkers in
this area, and the new MA course will provide a suitable grounding for
research in archaeoastronomy/cultural astronomy for graduates in any
one of a number of disparate disciplines, from both sides of the
science/non-science divide. In the meantime, the new modules will form
the basis of a bolstered archaeoastronomy strand within the existing
MA course in Landscape Archaeology run by the School of Archaeology
and Ancient History.
The Trust is also funding the development of an integrated web
resource on archaeoastronomy, which will provide a framework within
which new course materials and resources will be placed. This will be
going live early in 2004.

How can one combine superstition and science?
That would be the first time science would be assaulted by greedy
makebelief.

Oh, good...another purveyor of superstitious bullshit. Another
snake oil peddler trolling the internet in search of fucking
idiots to buy useless junk. Another believer in "cosmic
consciousness." <snicker> Are you one of those useless
"meditators"? (Pardon the redundancy.)

Get a job.
