For questions like those, I recommend reading about near-death experiences--
also called NDEs--people who flatlined but were revived. They tell of what
happens when the soul leaves the body.

Generally speaking, love abounds, both godlike and in the form of people we
have known, to guide the individual. We are never alone (unless we want to be)
and never aimlessly adrift.

I believe the lack of memory is at least partially related to differences in
bodies between lives. Body structure, body chemistry, other factors all
contribute to our feeling of "who we are", and make it difficult to remember
being someone different.
Again, NDEs usually refer to a superior force, not personified, but full of
love.
Most people find that each lifetime is set up to help us grow, even without
conscious memories of past lives. They say we make choices and set the stage
for our lifetimes.

That, I believe, is up to the individual. Some want a "rest", some want to
jump back into things.
Some people contend that the spirit realm is not limited by time, so a
reincarnation can even occur "backwards" in physical time. I don't know about
that.
