Almost every single night I awaken at 3:30 am. It's amazing how the
clock is within 3-5 minutes of that time no matter where I'm sleeping,
whether it's when I'm traveling or at home.

A few times in the last couple years I've experienced "sleep
paralysis" where I'm in my body trying to talk and trying to move yet
I can't. Finally I'm able to move.

More recently I awaken (again at 3:30 am) to what I've been thinking
are earthquakes. I experience a tremendous shudder as if the room is
shaking like an earthquake (I live in the Bay Area so I've experienced
a lot of them). Once the shudder is over, I ask my husband if he felt
the earthquake. The answer is always 'no'. I would swear there was
an earthquake, so the last time this happened, in the morning I went
on the web to usgs.gov where they track earthquakes. There was
nothing negligible in my area. (From my lifetime of living in the Bay
Area, I'd say the "earthquakes" I feel are about 4.0 - 5.0 on the
Richter scale, so they would surely be listed on usgs.gov.)

Now I'm wondering if this is something that's happening because I'm
returning to my body from an OBE. I've never remembered an OBE during
or after.

Is anyone able to shed any light on this? It's driving me crazy not
knowing why I'm feeling all these earthquakes.

Sincerely,
Shuddering in California

If you've read much about OBE, you've probably heard mention of the
'vibrations'. It's possible that you are experiencing the vibrations,
and responding to the sensation as an earthquake. I know that people who
live in earthquake-prone areas can become hypersensitive to vibrations in
rooms.

If what you are experiencing is the vibrations, then you are awakining in
a state in which you can attempt a conscious OBE (the vibrations serve as
a definite signpost that you're in the right state to go out).

Not all people experience the vibrations, but I did with each conscious
OBE. For me, they are a little like the sensation that you get when your
foot or hand is waking up after 'falling asleep', except without the
pins-and-needles pain. Another very similar sensation (don't try this!)
is the electric shock you get when you accidentally touch the spark plug
on a lawn mower (but again, without any pain).

If you awake in that state again, you might try to sit up immediately or
roll over as an attempt to induce an OBE.

You might be experiencing some confusion within your mental body image.
When you have been relaxed for more than about 20 minutes, the
proprioreceptors which normally tell your brain where each limb is lose
their calibration, and stop undating this image.

If you are still in a state approximating REM sleep (which you probably
are, as you are paralysed) then your eyes are probably moving. Eye
position is another signal which is fed to the body image, so it's likely
there will be some confusion: your eyes are moving rapidly, and there's no
input from your muscles to compare those signals to.

Hence you may feel as though you are rocking, or swaying, probably quite
rapidly.

yes, you are coming into coincidence w/ your body

those are one sort of vibes, the other is very "electrical" in
feeling, i've had and get both

on the sort you describe i often recall an ob experience just before
slamming back into my body, do you?

That's the weird thing. I don't remember OBEs. Do you think that's
normal? I wish I could remember them.

yes that's normal because we're acculturated to pay very littel
attention to our dreams, or intuitive faculties

try writing down until it resonates in the background of your
consciousness a series of short phrases, such as: "i remember my
obes", or something like that, for many days, and make it a pattern,
so that you get into the habit of welcoming them in your mind, and
that they are harmless, and actually instructive and healing

if you do this i think you'll recall your ob adventures, and your
dreams as well

If you can't recall your obe's then maybe you need to try lucid
dreaming techniques. That will help you remain aware during your
obe's, simply because ld's are a mind awake/body asleep stage like
obe's are. Another thing to try are affirmations like " I will remain
aware" and so on.

In my opinion, when you feel those earthquake-like shakings,
you are having strong vibrations and you are in the right mood
to START an OBE. My advice: do nothing, relax, think about
floating or flying, or maybe simply try to get smoothly out of
your bed, for instance rolling out or your bed.
WIth luck, you'll find yourself out of the body.

Robert Monroe describes similar situations in his first book
"Journeys out of the body".

This is well known. Look it up.

It's an inference.

So is this.

I realise that you've just gone into meltdown; but in case anyone more
reasonable is reading, I've explained that my supposition is based on
well-known facts and reasonable inferences.

I agree with Bart. Since you are the one who suggests this is all so well
known, you are the one who should supply a link to the proof.

Okay Richard, normally I wouldnt' play Bart's games; but since you asked
so nicely.

My original post was on Sept 26 2007, and was based, in part, on a
recent publication which I'd seen mentioned online somewhere. I haven't
been able to find that reference; but I've found some more.

http://www.answers.com/topic/proprioception?cat=health

From the Sci-Tech Encyclopedia: Proprioception

The sense of position and movement of the limbs and the sense of
muscular tension. The awareness of the orientation of the body in space
and the direction, extent, and rate of movement of the limbs depend in
part upon information derived from sensory receptors in the joints,
tendons, and muscles. Information from these receptors, called
proprioceptors, is normally integrated with that arising from vestibular
receptors (which signal gravitational acceleration and changes in
velocity of movements of the head), as well as from visual, auditory,
and tactile receptors. Sensory information from certain proprioceptors,
particularly those in muscles and tendons, need not reach consciousness,
but can be used by the motor system as feedback to guide postural
adjustments and control of well-practiced or semiautomatic movements
such as those involved in walking.

Later on the same page:

"The proprioceptive sense is often unnoticed because humans will adapt
to a continuously-present stimulus; this is called habituation,
desensitization, or adaptation. The effect is that proprioceptive
sensory impressions disappear, just as a scent can disappear over time.
One practical advantage of this is that unnoticed actions or sensation
continue in the background while an individual's attention can move to
another concern."

Then we have:

Although you'll need to pay for the article, and

Have fun.

Naturally, I'll expect the same level of evidence from you and Bart from
now on!

Thanks.
I will make every effort to make citations of anything factual that is not
from my own expereinces. My own expereinces can be taken for what they are.

Your own experiences are the most important. Your perceptions
communicate to you what is actual or factual. Ideas from others can
filter your perspective. Enlarge your respect for yourself and see
that you are getting true moments from your experiences and exposure.
Analyze the self to learn more or self and be prepared based on past
occurrences that you are preparing for more expanded views of self
when asleep and while awake.

As you grow, you will accumulate more truth and become more confident
that life is leading, guiding and directing you in all your
adventures. This is beneficial.
