If anyone is looking for a fix to run W2K under a VM this did the trick
for me ...

I had to upgrade W2K (in the VM) to unofficial service pack 5.1
available at Major Geeks. Don't know what it added but it allowed VmWare
tools to finally install and graphics (>640x480 VGA) now work along with
parallel port support for legacy applications requiring a hardware dongle.

Its definitely a treat to enjoy a mix of both old and new when the old
would cost major $$ to upgrade. The best part is its all free!

The comp has a newish video card and 24" LCD which is perfectly usable
in Win2k.

VMWare was the only VM I could find that supports the parallel port and
that was an absolute must to run the legacy app I had in mind.

Thanks to *Major Geeks* and *VmWare*, you saved me a bundle and 12 years
worth of work using the old app!

I've never had any problems running 2000 under VMware, including the tools.
Nothing special required on my end, just install from a SP4 disk and it's
good.

Just because I feel good doesn't mean I'm doing the right thing.

Everything I read about
the unofficial usp51.zip
stuff indicates it's just
a quick and easy way to
make sure your Win2K is
updated through SP4,
which if you've been
attentive to Windows
Update over the years it
should be anyway. Am I
missing something, 'cuz
I'm not seeing any
benefit to a duly updated
system.

No Win2k chip or video drivers available for my hardware. Until I
upgraded W2k in the VM none of the things I mentioned worked.

If it helps someone else fine ... if you don't need it thats fine too.

I hope I didn't come off
ungrateful for the info,
John -- I was just
disappointed that the
file didn't include any
stuff beyond what M$ has
provided over the years,
but that doesn't mean it
won't be helpful for
someone else. Peace!
