USB device disappears

My USR modem didn't appear when I logged on previously. I rebooted,
nothing. So I got into Control panel and queried the device, then it
workd. On netbooks this problem used to be from low battery, but this
time I was plugged in. THe only thing is that I left the modem plugged
in to the phone. Having lost two modems to lighnting in 2002 (and two
LCD monitors exactly a year ago), I usually don't do that, but I
forgot to unplug.
