Maybe the linux "community" needs to include an icon next to a distro
thats not user friendly? Hmmm...something unmistakable like a skull
perhaps to save people from the frustration (all too common) of
"trying" a new distro for "fun"?

One strategy is to 'approach' a distro. Go to distro watch, click on
the distro's name or put it into the finder gizmo and then 'work on it'.
That takes you to the distro's page which shows you where to read
reviews and where to download it, as well as how the distro is
configured such as package management, office suite, default desktop,
installation interface, and even journaled filesystems, as well as which
versions of various software comes in the .iso.
In the case of Arch, it also happens that distrowatch itself, in the
person of Michael Raugh did a review in September in the feature report
of their weekly publication and he said "The tone and feel of Arch is
also very different from those of most mainstream distros I've worked
with. Ubuntu, Fedora, Mandriva, et al make an effort to embrace novice
users and ease their transition to Linux. Arch doesn't. It's not hostile
to newbies by any means, but the documentation and the community web
site make it very clear, in a polite and reasonable way, that Arch is
intended for "the competent Linux user" and that people who use Arch are
expected to take responsibility for how they use and manage their
systems."
He also didn't have a very easy time of it. But he had a number of
positives to say about it, including what he liked about Arch better
than Ub. But he also had this to say:
"On the negative side, it was certainly more work getting Arch set up
and running. I actually did four installations in total: one test
install in a virtual machine just to get a feel for the installer; then
the ill-fated network install; then a core install that I aborted when I
got frustrated trying to follow the official instruction guide, which is
more general and less helpful than the beginner's guide; and finally the
install I detailed in this piece, which is what I'm working on now. The
Pacman package manager is command-line only; there is no GUI for
searching or browsing the package lists, so Arch users have to get
familiar with Pacman's search ability to locate what they want."
I highly recommend approaching any distro from DistroWatch first, sizing
up how it is 'put together, then by reading a few reviews and then by
'thinking about' whether or not maybe I would choose a different distro
to do whatever I would be trying to do, then doing the same thing for
that distro at DW etc.

I meant to get to the distro's page on DW distrowatch, not the distro's
webpage.

Maybe people trying out new distros should read what the maintainers of
each distro themselves have to say about it.
<http://www.archlinux.org/about/>
About Arch Linux
Arch Linux is an independently developed, i686/x86-64 general purpose
GNU/Linux distribution versatile enough to suit any role. Development
focuses on simplicity, minimalism, and code elegance. Arch is installed
as a minimal base system, configured by the user upon which their own
ideal environment is assembled by installing only what is required or
desired for their unique purposes. GUI configuration utilities are not
officially provided, and most system configuration is performed from
the shell by editing simple text files. Arch strives to stay bleeding
edge, and typically offers the latest stable versions of most
software.
[...]
Compare that with <http://www2.mandriva.com/linux/what-is-mandriva-linux/>
A better Linux OS.
Convivial. Simple. And free.
Mandriva Linux is an operating system for your computer. Easy to try.
Easy to install. Easy to use.
[...]
If you are prepared to pay good money, Mandriva Powerpack costs €49 or $59
and includes non-FOSS packages and drivers which you won't find included
with 'free' or 'purist' distros but which make 'getting started' a lot
easier. (You can add any or all of those things to a purist free distro,
once you've got it installed and running, but you need to have some idea
what you're doing before you try that).
Some other distros offer you a similar 'FOSS only or pay' choice.

Many (most?) Linux distros require the user to have a 3-digit IQ.
You don't meet the prerequisites.

Yes, there should certainly be a warning: Warning - this Linux
distribution requires a room temperature IQ and the ability to read and
follow directions.

Ok, so Wolfie has either been reading far too many Diaper Boy posts and
has become Diaper Boy, or Wolfie is Diaper Boy.
Either way...

Though I've fooled with most of the major distributions out there...
Gentoo was too much for me...
so I never looked at Arch either.
With enough time I might have been able to muddle through it...but did
not think it was worth the effort.

Microsoft can't buy Linux.
They cannot make it go away.
And they *can't* prevent it from booting.
Free at last, thank fsck, free at last!
I did that. Thats why I said "lets have an icon like a skull" to
represent distros that are not "user friendly".
The screen shots of Arch were pretty...trying to install it was not.

Shut up, p3d0.
If I want *your* opinion I'll ask a guy pushing a shopping cart full of
cans with a stain on his pants who reeks of piss. Chances are his
"opinion" will match yours.

You'll take my opinion, whether you want to or not, and you'll like it.
