Can somebody please give me a recommendation for a printer that is known
to work? Thank you ahead of time!

Never seen one not to work. HP I guess should work for sure, there are so
many drivers.

Well, I had a Brother HL2040 just now (it was very old). I installed the
drivers from Brother, and no go! Suse recognized the printer, installed
the driver, it started the printer, but prints no text. Not too useful.

JUST TELL ME ONE THAT IS KNOWN TO WORK FOR SURE AND I WILL BUY IT.

Must had been because something completely else, ie a hardware or
communication /control error.

As said, buy a HP, should work, 98% for sure. The idea is to choose a
driver close to the hardware, ie a laser printer to a laser driver and so
on.

I did my homework. I got the driver here:
http://welcome.solutions.brother.com/bsc/public_s/id/linux/en/download_prn.html#HL-2040

It activated the printer. Hook ups were solid.
The paper went through. NO TEXT however.

I have the newest version of SUSE btw.

I have here on this computer a HP Laserjet 1012 that was gifted to me when
HP/MickeySoft dropped support for it. On my wifes computer she has a HP
PSC-1500 series. Both work well, both will accept print from the other
computer, the 1500 is a color inkjet but the laser is faster. The 1500 is also
a scanner, I haven't really tried to figure out how to make the scanning
software work across the network, and I'm not sure it's worth the effort since
it's about a 9 foot walk over to it. Both fired off and started working during
the installation. My recommendation would to buy a relatively inexpensive all
in one printer from someplace like Sams or CostCo or whatever is on sale in the
Sunday paper. For a long time it was almost cheaper to buy a new printer and
throw the old one away rather than to buy new ink cartridges. That being said,
the latest/greatest/newest models could be problematic.

I have a Brother HL5250DN which was bought in 2005 & it works with
opensuse 12.3; using Brother's postscript driver from the install dvd.

If you didn't see your Brother model at first, do the "not found" &
have suse do a expanded check; I've found several drivers for the
HL5250DN; no explanation regarding the difference between the "foobar",
manufacturer, or "open"(?). I just selected Brother's drivers but have
tried the "foobar" ver on a different suse ver only because there was
(used to be) a "recommended" in parens with the "foobar" ver.

I think suse just get Brother's drivers & include it with the distro,
is nice of the distro & Brother.

Brother printers always work with GNU/Linux. Brother supports all of
their products by way of GPL'd drivers and utilities, and - at least,
insofar as my own experience goes - they're also more economic on
toner/ink than comparable offers from - say - Hewlett-Packard.

That said, HP printers are generally well-supported as well, as are
Epson printers. Samsung also makes some decent printers, but whatever
you do, stay away from Canon. They are notoriously uncooperative
towards the GNU/Linux community. Some Canon models may be gotten to
work in GNU/Linux, but certainly not all of them.

Thanks. I do have an older inkjet printer in the closet.
I'll try that one before I panic.

In windoze yes, this is exactly the point I made. The new printers only
differ from the older ones by the few features implemented. In Linux an
older driver will work.As well a driver of a lower index, ie a HP Laser
Jet Series 5000 driver will work fine in connection with any of the newer
same series.

Generally, if the box says it supports MAC and MS, it will most likely
work. If you come down to it, any machine with PCL (Printer Control
Language) will work. I've never had an issue with any Brother printer,
though I've most often used their lasers.

I do have some big Canon printers work with cups under Linux.
These are models 6055, 6075, 6275, 1730, 1750. All of them have Postscript
level 3 included.
But these are definitely not for SOHO use.

This will work with a filter on the print server that converts Postscript
to PCL5/PCL6.

That is something that you can do at home, but never try this in a professional
environment, because these conversions are less than perfect.

I don't recognize Aragorn's remark either. Canon has drivers for Linux
on their website to download which you can't say for most hardware
suppliers.

Using an iP4700 here under CuPS. Definitely for SOHO use, with the
emphasis on the S for Small. Nice printer though.
