Subject: opensuse 10.3 usb hotplug issue?
I can't hotplug my usb camera or usb memory stick.
On the internet I see some postings that this is a problem with opensuse
10.3.
Is this indeed?

Manual mount is no problem.
I'm not sure if it worked after the initial "standard" instalation.
I have run gparted, some postings refer to this regarding this problem.

On mu old opensuse 10.2 machine this hotplug was OK.

Willy

I had problems with hotplug in Suse 10.3 when I booted to runlevel 3,
logged in and started X with "xinit". After I changed to boot to
runlevel 5 my problems with hotplug disappeared.

I do not understand why, but my experience can maybe give you a hint?

I have a usb hard drive.  I notice that I cannot use this and another usb
storage device (camera, memory stick) at the same time.  Slightly annoying
as I cannot directly move pictures from the camera to the usb hdd.

hotplugging is fine with all devices.

no problem here
openSUSE 10.3 (32 and 64 bit) with KDE 3.5.8
What do you mean with hotplug, (not having a popup? )

Do you use KDE?
Yes, go with konqueror to "media:/" or "sysinfo:/"
can you see the usb device?

Do you see the usb device if you do in a konsole
"mount -l" ?

This may be a manifestation of a known bug that has been in 10.3 ever
since the beta tests -- and never fixed, though it is marked "fixed"
in bugzilla.

If you boot straight into runlevel 5 (X plus multiuser and network)
everything seem to work just fine.  Plug a stick into a USB port and
it gets recognized in a few seconds.  No manual mount needed.

However, if you boot into runlevel 3 (multiuser and no network),
automount does not work but manual mount does.  That is consistent
with what has been the usual behavior for runlevel 3.

Now if one is in runlevel 3 and tries to go to X mode by typing
"startx", one enters runlevel 5 just fine.   But hotplugging does NOT
work.  You can manual mount though.  This is a bug that did not exist
in 10.0, 10.1, or 10.2.

On the other hand, if one is in runlevel 3 and goes to X mode by
typing  "sudo /sbin/init 5"  (without the quotes) then you will
end up in runlevel 5 and hotplugging will work just fine.

The "sudo" is needed because "init" is a root command and one needs
to be root to use it.

I do hope thata this silly bug wil be fixed in 11.
