I was going to install them and ran into this message:

k3b-codecs-2.0.2-15.39.x86_64 requires k3b = 2.0.2-15.39, but this requirement
cannot be provided

It does give me the option of doing lots of things, several of which look bad to
my simple outlook.

graham@linux:~> rpm -q k3b
k3b-2.0.2-15.39.x86_64
this on os 12.3 with updates.
If your result from the above command is the same, I suggest you choose
the option - ignore dependencies and install anyway -

What version of k3b do you have?

I would say you have a repositorie missing.

i can't say anything on 64bit apps as i use 32bit
but i have k3b installed with k3b-codecs.

you can get k3b2.0.2-15.39 from a site called rpm search

graham and Darklight,

It also provides this.

uninstallable providers: k3b-2.0.2-15.39.i586[Packman]
k3b-2.0.2-15.39.x86_64[Packman]

The rpm -q k3b shows this.
k3b-2.0.2-26.1.2.x86_64

An attempt to update k3b downloads 6.5Mb of something, and apparently does
nothing with it since nothing changes.

Based on the dates, and some stuff I found in Yast regarding update history, I
did the install on this machine April 18. I have another computer which was
done on April 16, both were fresh installs using a network install. Both
provide the same messages. I also have a OpenBSD machine that had a fresh
install on April 25, but that means nothing in this context except I'm confused.
:-)

Since this isn't really critical right now I'll add it to my list of things to
get back to, which I will since stuff like this really, really bugs me. Thanks
for your time and help.

I've had this same problem continuously since 12.2.
The codecs are always a version behind the application from Packman.
At least, how I understand the versions.
-----
rpm -q k3b
k3b-2.0.2-15.39.x86_64
-----
Of course, having codecs is better than a slight version change.

Now I have:

rpm -q k3b
k3b-2.0.2-15.40.x86_64

with matching codecs from Packman
and no more Yast naggings
