Description: Questions, answers & general talk of Slackware Linux.

rename doesn't?
Recently somebody suggested 'rename' as a solution to something I forgot, but after a couple tries 'rename' to remove "_01" from 234 filenames, I resorted to simple CLI stuff: $ ls > file $ gawk '/JPG/{inp=$0;sub(/_01/,"");pr int "mv " inp " " $0}' file>file2 $ head -3 file2 mv DSC_6047_01.JPG DSC_6047.JPG... more »

Slack 13.37, Canon MF4270 limited function
I'm trying to install this printer with very limited success. I have downloaded cndrvcups -common-2.40-2.i386.rpm and cndrvcups-ufr2- uk-2.40-2.i386.rpm from the Canon website, converted to .tgz with rpm2tgz and installed them with installpkg. I then installed the printer with Cups 1.4.6 using CNCUPSMF4200ZK.ppd. After having printed... more »

Bootloaders (LILO, GRUB, GRUB2, MS windows) - compare/contrast etc
Background: I've got a machine with mucked up dual boot from attempting to get full install on a USB from a Ubuntu 10.10 live cd. GRUB2 ended up on my hard drive, all else on USB stick. Got confusing and confused(responder didn't pay attention to differences between Legacy Grub and Grub2) responses on their forum to either removing Grub or forcing... more »

Slackware Admiration
I saw the following message on a newsgroup that appears to be made up of e-mails to a FreeBSD mailing list. It seems even some FreeBSD users have good things to say about our favorite distro. ****************************** ****************************** ********* ...Newsgroups: mpc.lists.freebsd.questions,mu c.lists.freebsd.questions... more »

Slackware 13.37: white stripes on the windows
Hello everyone. I just installed linux slackware 13.37 but x window does not work properly. It is slow to react to commands, but the most annoying thing is that any open window appears graphically incomplete, including the menu that appears when you click the right mouse button, and also that of the K button at the bottom left of the screen.... more »

ARMed Slack and the upcoming Raspberry Pi
The capabilities of the credit card size boards seem exciting. The price point for this computer could be another step to put computers into even more devices and and applications. I am looking forward to testing with the device. I am wondering if it will be possible to try slackware, al-a armed slack. Or if the devices' CPU is slightly different than the ARMv4... more »

Device Permissions: Group Membership
I just noticed that on version 13.37 of Slackware the individual user doesn't have to be a member of the audio group to use the sound devices. The same goes for the user not having to be a member of the video group to use webcams, etc. In a way it makes more sense for the user to have to be given explicit permission. What changed that makes it possible... more »

Adding zeros to filenames
Greetings from a longtime Slacker! I am trying to get some help that's beyond RTFM. I have an ebook series in pdf that I am trying to split into its' component books. When I split the book into pages, it numbers them 1,2,3,...10,11,12...100,101,10 2...etc., just like it should. I'm trying to arrange them to merge, but they get listed as... more »
