I might have thought it was just older hardware. I'm still using a
computer that isn't 64bits. I think the faster one that someone
intends to give me is 64bit, but I'm not sure I'd bother since I'm not
likely to load it up with more RAM.

How much you want it to mature?
My personal meeting with 64 bit OS is from the '60's - logical
circuits for the "Polaris" (born/designed in '50's) - for better life
imitation used Gray code on then availably hardware.
32 bits simple work - what else do you want it to do?

Perhaps that is because 64 bit slackware is totally useless.
