Mine doesn't work in Slackware 10.0, Mandrake 10 or Red Hat 9

This is a crude forgery. The ESS1868 does not work with Slackware.

Slack 10's default is OSS right? I don't really know how to switch

My apologies, I couldn't help myself. I'm just a newbie that has been trying
to learn Linux for years and preferred Slackware from the day it was
introduced.
This newsgroup pretty much to my experience likes to flame everyone instead
of trying to help. So, just as a couple of people were actually trying to
help, I think, along comes what's it's name.
I will refrain from further actions of such

This is wrong. Slackware since 9.1 defaults to ALSA for sound.

> You will have to compile the kernel. Do a google search for

This is wrong too. Unload the ALSA modules and load your OSS driver;
you have switched from ALSA to OSS. Edit /etc/hotplug/blacklist as
comments therein will show you how to do, and in most cases you're
done.

In your case, you're not, because that's an ISA sound chip. I think
it's the same one that's in my kids' machine, so it does indeed work
with Linux and ALSA.

"alsaconf" does do probing for ISA. I don't remember if that worked for
me or not. Anyway, it looks like the ALSA driver they have (2.4.25
kernel) is "snd-es18xx". I think the name in 2.6.x kernels has dropped
the "snd-" prefix.
#v+
# modprobe -v snd-es18xx
# alsamixer # and set volume levels
# alsactl store
#v-

Then you have sound. Do one of the many things you can do to ensure
that the module loads whenever you boot and NOW you're done. alsaconf
puts this in /etc/modules.conf:

#v+
# --- BEGIN: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
# --- ALSACONF verion 1.0.4 ---
alias char-major-116 snd
alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss
alias snd-card-0 snd-es18xx
alias sound-slot-0 snd-es18xx
options snd-es18xx isapnp=0 dma1=1 dma2=0 irq=5
# --- END: Generated by ALSACONF, do not edit. ---
#v-

Ah, look, it DOES seem that alsaconf detected that card. Your "options"
line might be different, so go with alsaconf.

> "ESS1868 linux" and you will find directions on what settings
> you'll need to compile the kernel.

Horsefeathers. A classic case of the blind leading the blind. Which is
odd, because I think this "Rhonda" is the real Roger, and I think he's
really trying to help. (Sometimes, he does.) I'm surprised to see him
telling you to compile a kernel for this.

Now, back to the question of whether ALSA or OSS is better: in some
cases, probably mostly with ISA sound chips, OSS might be better. I
think the only thing lacking with ALSA overall is documentation, but
it's definitely possible that some of the less-popular drivers failed
to catch up to the quality of their OSS counterparts.

You can try it and see, or hear. I think your 2.4.x OSS driver would be
"sb", and it probably requires parameters to get it working.

Nice sig, but the delimeter is busted. That should be "-- " (note the
space, it's important).

Not just a nice .sig, it was also an impressive imitation of your
posting style! Likely from the same one who's impersonating Roger!

BTW I suppose you haven't seen this, but Roger's posting your home
address and telephone number in the An Metet remailer posts. :)

Nah! You would know that wasn't me straight-up. No PGP-sig for one, but
I rarely ever talk about anyone's sex life or sexual tendencies. I
don't feel like I need to sink to something that low to win an argument
or prove my point (unless of course the point I'm trying to prove is a
sexual one, but I digress). It's like Godwin's law. Resulting to
baseless personal attacks is as demeaning to yourself as to whom you
are writing about. I won't go into whether or not being homosexual is
something one should attack as this is not the time nor place for such
a discussion.

I assume you're talking about this?

Message-ID: <74b882408a98a34f...@aonymous.poster>

Like I said, ask William Hunt. He's got my real street address and can
verify that's not it. As far as this argument that the numbers are off
by 1 and that somehow I must have a second phone line, anyone who's
worked for the POTS system knows that's completely false. Phone numbers
aren't given out based on the physical location of the phone anymore.
