Can I just upgrade V13 with a new kernel + initrd for USBstik booting?

My version 13 fails to boot from USBstik or Compact-Flash.
The docos for initrd suggest that the necessary modules can be
added for an initrd.gz to complete the booting.

I have no access to broadband and want to use my existing
vers. 13 DVD. So should I just d/l a newer kernel and `mkinitrd`
since this kernel has no initrd.

And how do I know the names of the needed modules to include
for `mkinitrd`, so that booting from USBstik and CF is possible?

Where does Compact-Flash and USBstik fit in the list of IDE
& SCSI capable kernels?

== TIA
