Slack 13.37, Canon MF4270 limited function

I'm trying to install this printer with very limited success. I have
downloaded cndrvcups -common-2.40-2.i386.rpm and cndrvcups-ufr2-
uk-2.40-2.i386.rpm from the Canon website, converted to .tgz with
rpm2tgz and installed them with installpkg. I then installed the
printer with Cups 1.4.6 using CNCUPSMF4200ZK.ppd. After having printed
the test page I thought that everything was ok but it was not! I can
print pure text files (.txt and .rtf) but nothing else. When I try to
print for instance a pdf file I can see the file is added in the print
queue but the only result from the printer is, after 30 seconds or so,
3 beeps and then I have to reset both the computer and the printer to
get it going again (being able to print text files). I guess the
computer is sending illegal characters to the printer. Is the ppd file
correct?

I have no experience from that printer, but some googling got me to the

Having to download a 32 MB big binary driver makes me think that this is a
braindead "GDI"-printer. Those braindead printers are usually rather cheap
and they are cheap for a reason. If time is of any value for you you might
be better off byuing a new printer. The keyword to search for when buying
a printer is builtin support for PostScript.

I wouldn't say that rtf is pure text. You probably print rtf files from
some program which converts it to postscript, then the printer driver
converts it to some other printer language if the printer doesn't support
postscript natively.

Only guessing now, but a total reboot of the computer is probably
overkill. Most likely it would be enough to restart cups.

It could also be that you have reached some memory limitation. Maybe the
"shared" builtin 32 MB in the printer is not enough to print your graphics?

Hard to say, only Canon would be able to answer that.
