Having to download a 32 MB big binary driver makes me think that this is a
braindead "GDI"-printer. Those braindead printers are usually rather cheap
and they are cheap for a reason. If time is of any value for you you might
be better off byuing a new printer. The keyword to search for when buying
a printer is builtin support for PostScript.

I wouldn't say that rtf is pure text. You probably print rtf files from
some program which converts it to postscript, then the printer driver
converts it to some other printer language if the printer doesn't support
postscript natively.

Only guessing now, but a total reboot of the computer is probably
overkill. Most likely it would be enough to restart cups.

It could also be that you have reached some memory limitation. Maybe the
"shared" builtin 32 MB in the printer is not enough to print your graphics?
