I have a Sony Vaio VGN-BZ21VN.
The problem seems to be somewhat similar to this problem discussed
here in June:
http://groups.google.com/group/alt.os.linux.slackware/browse_thread/thread/6b64df1d5abd9832/730177ffadef895f?lnk=raot&fwc=1
I've been able to get to a login prompt using the poster's solution of
adding nomodeset as a boot parameter, but as he found, I could then
not start X, with much the same error that he encountered:
(==) Using default built-in configuration (30 lines)
(EE) Failed to load module "fbdev" (module does not exist, 0)
(EE) intel(0): No kernel modesetting driver detected.
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.
Fatal server error:
no screens found
As posters suggested there, I have tried to boot using vga=normal
either in lilo.conf or as a parameter passed as boot time. I think
this may have worked once, but I haven't been able to repeat it a
second time, even doing the exact same thing, and even then I had the
same or a very similar problem launching X.
I have made sure that there is no xorg.conf in /etc/X11.
There is also some information on a similar install here, which I may
not have made full use of due to my own ignorance:
http://www.puresimplicity.net/~delahunt/linux/sony/sony.html
Does anyone else have suggestions for things I could try or extra
information I should provide?
Thanks in advance,
Dan

This is a problem with KMS. In order to troubleshoot it we're going to
need to know what video card your laptop has and if it's an nvidia or
radeon card, if you've installed their binary blob drivers or not.

To the best of my knowledge the video card is an "Intel GMA 4500MHD".
The full specs of the laptop are here:
http://alatest.co.uk/reviews/laptop-computer-reviews/sony-vaio-vgn-bz21vn/po3-76110411,30/#details
I haven't installed anything other than a vanilla Slackware 13.1
install. I never had any trouble with the graphics card under 13.0.
Thanks for any help you can offer,
Dan

Unfortunately, the intel drivers have been in a buggy state in recent
months, on all levels from kernel to xorg. Maybe an update to current might
help.

Hmm... That's odd. Rarely do you see problems with the intel video
cards in 13.1. Are you using the generic kernel or the huge kernel?
Please provide the output of lspci -v and the complete contents of
lilo.conf (preferably without the comments).
Are you by any chance dual-booting or using GRUB as your boot manager?

Thanks Martin, I'll keep that in mind and give it a try if all else
fails.

isn't:

Lilo.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm not (yet) having trouble with X --
so far I can't even boot as far as the command line (without
nomodeset), so I think I have a different problem to fix first.
