Interesting news tonight is that Western Digital and
Seagate are substantially reducing their HD warranty
periods. I am not surprised.

Because, they seem now to be getting their Thailand
flooded HD manufacturing back in operation after the
floods. But! But 1) as manufacturing restarts they
will be debugging a lot of very finely made
manufacturing machinery, starting from cold; and 2)
their whole manufacturing system will be re-learning
how to operate. Which will result in new drives
quality significantly below that of pre-flood drives.

This reality is going to cause some pain among users
if they aren't prepared for it (or if they are!) so
I'm watching the news, which is going to be most
interesting. *And* I won't be buying any new HD's
for a while, except maybe when the price drops as
I expect after a few months, perhaps a first SSL
drive.

Anyone have any idea how long until it's "safe" to buy a new drive again?

No job is so small it doesn't require all your tools.

if they're cheaper, just use them as throwaways in a raid, if they
survive, bonus.
