I wanted to make a bootable floppy disk based on the kernel I am
currently running. However, such kernel is too big for a floppy. What is
the procedure to make a bootable CD based on an installed kernel?

I forgot: What I want to do is to boot off a kernel on a CD, and
mount a filesystem already in the disk. I would like to put in the CD only
the stuff that I absolutely need for this purpose.

Make an image of bootable hard disk or a 2880KB floppy. Then make a
bootable CD with mkisofs withe the -hard-disk-boot or -b option (see man
mkisofs for details)

Use the 'mkrescue --iso' command. This will create a image named
rescue.iso and when you burn this image to a CD you'll get a boot-CD
instead of a boot-floppy.

This area is designed to become quite warm during normal operation.

I think what you want is closer to a LiveCD. Check out
http://www.linux-live.org for more details on how this is accomplished.

There is in certain living souls
A quality of loneliness unspeakable,
So great it must be shared
As company is shared by lesser beings.
Such a loneliness is mine; so know by this
That in immensity
There is one lonelier than you.
