Where can I find a descent Usenet newsreader for Linux? Something that
has at least the same functionality as FreeAgent.

PS, I hope it's in a *.rpm distributed format.

If you are running gnome desktop Pan is the best. It is located at
pan.rebelbase.com

No idea about KDE solutions.

Yes, and deb, and tarfile.

However you will most likely need to install Helix Gnome to get the
latest version working. Details are at the pan webpage.

Knode (KDE newsreader) seems quite nice - been using it for a week now.
Haven't worked out how to make scoring work yet, but everything else works
fine. It knows about stuff like signatures when viewing/replying, threads
messages and allows you to set up multiple filters etc. Still after
battling with Netscape as a newsreader for a year or two, anything seems
good!

It is in rpm format (within kdenetwork...rpm) with the standard Mandrake
7.2 dist.

You can also try Pine, which is fast, elegant, and reads newsgroups
perfectly. While Pan is a pretty good newsreader, i find it very
cluttered, especially that mess of a buttonbar

Pan looks good so far but I what to change the font settings inside the
message body display and I can't find where. Can someone point this out
to me?

And where is the setting for defining how many headers will be
downloaded? When I told Pan to get all headers and messages from this
group it grabbed 1410 headers. I wanted just the last 100. Where do I set
something like this?

Do you have the URL to the Knode rpm?

knode won't work for me. I'm still running kde 1.x not 2.x. I'm missing
all those new libraries. Oh well.

You need the kdenetwork rpm - try http://www.rpmfind.net/

I prefer Netscape.

KDE's newsreader is KRN. Not bad but a few unusual features. I miss most the
thread kill feature, like "T" with Netscape.

Tho I'm using Pan 0.9.3 now - I still frequently run FreeAgent under

What he said... FreeAgent runs perfectly under wine. I use Netscape for
general news and posting (like right now), and Agent for grouped saves
and multipart binaries. Try it, you'll like it.

Run Agent under Wine. I do, it's a bit sluggish starting up but otherwise
seems to work ok.

And it means you can use the same app whether in Windows or Linux, which
can be quite handy at times.

Its also in the KDE-2.1 release. I haven't tried it personally *yet*
but a friend gave it rave reviews last nite. Now if it can be scripted
like THOR can be...

Cheers, Gene
